krylon and other ghetto ar paintjob pic thread. Other platforms welcome too

Question for you guys: what if any prep do you need to do to a gun to do a paintjob like this? I'm cobbling together a real Frankenstein of an 870. It will have the express finish receiver/mag tube, probably parkerized mag extension, possibly parkerized barrel, and magpul furniture. Can I just go at it with the rattle can, or do you do some kind of pre-treatment? I mean obviously take the guts out and everything, but can you just spray krylon over different factory finishes like that?

Spray it down with a degreaser I use non chlorinated brake kleen

That simple eh? Degrease and paint? Awesome. Maybe when I get my build done I'll remember to post a picture here.

Brake cleaner or just a quick bath in simple green. Depending on what you're covering sometimes a base coat of automotive primer creates a even surface for the paint to adhered with. Don't forget to clear coat with matte varnish unless you are going for the battle worn finish.

I did nothing to prep. Just tape up what I didn’t want painted and let’er rip. I wanted it to flake and beat up, but I messed up. I used that aveao? Paint which is actually really durable and doesn’t rub off easily so it’s staying on better than I want it to.

Colt 6920 painted in a few minutes, after masking, using a piece of camo net and Aervoe military paint as per Pat Rogers:

Krylon and Rustoleum doesn't last as long as Aervoe, hence why we only use Aervoe. Long term, hard use will take off the finish regardless, but then you just apply it again.

The point is not to make it pretty, it's to make it something other than black, and preferably better able to fit into your environment.

If you want pretty, get your gun Cerakoted, Duracoated, or hydro dipped, and then spend the day crying the first time you get a scratch, nick or chip in the finish.

Acklands Grainger, but you usually have to have a business account with them, and it comes in cases of six. Get together with a few friends, so you get a can or two of each colour, and get someone to buy it through their company.

Recommended colours are:

Sand 30277
Highland 480
Marine Corps Green 34052
Dark Green 34102
Olive Drab 34088

For the technique, Google "Pat Rogers painting your carbine". Just a note: do not cross post the technique here.
