Anyone Using a 28 Gauge in the Field This Season

Ahhh a neckro thread from the past.
The EE is where you will find something you are looking for.

Well I've been around here long enough to know that, but thanks to the new EE format wtb ads don't get nearly as much traffic as they used to. I put one up but don't have much faith.

Not sure just what 28 gauge I will use to start this season ,when I get a chance to go.Been thinking of using my old Wincheste/Cooey Model 84,for old times sake, but not sure just yet.

I'd like a Beretta Silver Pigeon 1 combo set 20/28 with 28" pipes, but for the type of hunting I'm doing I'd feel better about rough hunting with the Cooeys.........Harold

Anyone tried the new Alliant Pro-Reach powder in the 28 ga ? Supposed to crack 1300 fps + with 3/4 oz loads and patterns beautiful. Will have to try a lb before getting a jug..........Harold

I run a Savage Milano O/U in 28 gauge, had a Franchi Veloce before and a Stevens 512. I miss the shorter 26" barrels for my eastern woods, but so far the Milano has proven deadly on grouse, woodcock and pheasant. My pointers are starting to get a bit of age on them so I don't run them as hard as I once did, but to be honest with my increasing age I really appreciate the little 28, so easy to carry and shoot, it is a true uplander hunters dream gun.

One thing I have not understood yet is why no one makes a 28 gauge rifled shotgun for use with sabot's. It would be a lot more manageable than even a 20-gauge. Given that the 28 is only .55 inch, it should be fairly easy to design a Powerbelt type projectile, or a sabot to shoot 40 caliber sized bullets. I use a 20 ga. Savage because it's not as bulky as the 12, but I know I'd switch to a 28, or even a .410 (if someone made one with reasonable power and projectiles).

Absolutely I use a 28ga in the field. What's not to like, light, fast handling, effective. My favourite grouse woodcock and rabbit gauge. Does a great job on pheasants over a pointing dog too.

Got an early model 220 with the first firing pin mechanism this year. Late 30's as near as I can tell. It points right where I look and the trigger pull is excellent. It is very hard to miss with using the supposedly terrible for a 28 one ounce Winchester loads.

I also have been known to use an SKB 385 or two in28 as well as an AYA. Problem is the 500 dollar savage 220 works for me the best.
