Can any old hunting scope go on a mini? Or is the action a little rough on scopes?
One of the things that make it not scope friendly is the contact of the op rod against the face of the receiver when the bolt is at full rear battery during the cycle.
It literally hammers into the face of the receiver, steel on steel full retard. They are over gassed but that's what makes them so reliable and awesome.
I don't want to restrict the gas as I value reliability over all.
But I wanted to soften the smashing, clanging feel of the rifle.
I made a 3/16 thick gasket out of silicone automotive high temp gasket maker. Just taped some wax paper onto one side of two pieces of cardboard, squirted a whole ball of it onto one piece and sandwiched it flat until it was at around 3/16th inch and a good size circle and let it dry overnight. Then peel the wax paper off both sides.
Then I cut it to the shape of the front of the receiver, used a fired 9mm casing to hammer/punch out the small circle so the op rod spring guide can fit through.
The stuff can take a pounding with a ball peen hammer against a concrete floor and retain its structure and shape so it should be good to go.
I also made one for to fit around the gas tube.
The same thing happens there when the op rod/bolt returns to the full battery position. It smashes into the gas block metal on metal full force lol
It will not make it any more accurate (she's good enough) but will completely dampen the clanging metal vibrations during firing and makes it much more comfortable to shoot.
Will take some pics when I get a chance. If the gasket fails eventually, the next one will be made of belt leather
Just make sure that whatever you use is of the right material and thickness to allow for the op rod and bolt to move rearward enough to both eject casings and also lock to the rear on empty mag.
Planning on doing a light 400/600 grit polish on the hammer and sear soon to get the creep out the trigger a touch.
