The Kodiak & the Bull Moose

I love the big bores as well,the 375 ultra i had seem to kill moose more quickly than the 416. More rapid expansion I expect. Though my old man killed many big Yukon bulls in dramatic fashion with the old 300 win. On an animal weighing 1200lbs or more instant drops are not the norm, usually Bullwinkle is dead he just doesn't know it yet

SlamFire....Why not rechamber to a .375 Weatherby?? Im pushing 300's at 2780 FPS and will be using it on moose this year...Has just the right amount of punch and H&H ammo can be used in a pinch!! Cheaper than the .378 Weatherby and only 100 fps slower than it too!!!

Some food for thought.

Look at the first part of the sentence you underlined: "With solid bullets.....". With proper expending hunting bullets lots of "shock" is transmitted.

I hope you're just having fun and trolling with your big bores over .40 cal, some may find your idea of a suitable big game cartridge a bit ridiculous.

Lol this is at least the 2nd time I've seen him cite that page erroneously to downplay the capabilities of the 375.

While I agree with his opinion that a high speed 40cal is mighty capable, I disagree with his opinion on how much better they are than other options simply by virtue of being 40cal+ vs sub-40cal.

Also, Slamfire, area of a circle is calculated with the square of the radius, not the diameter, so your increase in area is less than you stated earlier.

I sure you'd be a riot around the camp fire though. Lol

Cross-sectional area = A
Radius = r
Diameter = d = r/2

A = pi x r^2 = pi x (d/2)^2 so still proportional to the square of the diameter.

Cross-sectional area of a .416 vs. .375: (.416/.375)^2 = 1.23, or 23% more cross-sectional area.

I must say this is the most entertaining thread . Jack O’Connor was surely undergunned with his small useless 270 Winchester. How those animals died , we will never know..lol

I wouldn't recommend re chambering that sako.. Would kill resale value . Just go buy a 378wby , add it to your collection lol... Try the 375 on moose with that 300gr AB crushing along @3000fps

:d

Doing a euro mount with this one. My Bull Elk was done as a euro mount which was a 1 shot DRT kill with a 300gr TSX bullet impacting at 2400 fps from my .45-70 Ruger No.1. Quite a sight to see a 1000 lb Bull Elk hit the ground so hard it bounced. :d

I've had the exact same results with a 270 and 110gr ttsx bullets odd. I just be hunting inferior animals or more than likely this is the dumbest thread I've seen on cgn yet

The flies are circling again...:p

Speaking of Jack O'Connor, he wasn't getting 1 shot DRT kills with the .270 on Moose and thought the .375 would have worked better (The Rifle Book, p.228). Copton Creek, I know the area. :cool:

...I have dropped two moose, (a cow and a 34 in bull), the cow was hit in the neck and tipped over after one step. The bull was hit in the lungs before the bullet lodged in the far shoulder. He just dropped in his tracks. Both were shot with my Win 300 Mag using 180 gn corelocks...

To Jetjock: Was the Bull up close in a highly agitated and aggressive state (and potentially dangerous) responding to your calls?

moose has never put on the list of dangerous game ...

As 'Ol Elmer would say, "use enough gun..."

"Hunter airlifted to hospital after wounded moose fights back" -

nope this is not the dumbest thread ever on CGN, those would be what's the biggest animal you've killed with 22/250, 243..
no need to be so serious with such threads ... there is some entertainment value here
plus everyone knows the best moose caliber is the 460wby with a 350gr X@3000fps.... damn now I miss my 460
