Valmet M78 7.62x39 Value

I know someone with a brand new, in the box, never dirty/never cleaned one in x39 - he turned down $6K. What they should cost, and what their market value is are 2 different things. Valmets weren't cheap when I was hauling a Norc Type 56 through the bush on weekends, given that the Norcs are gone, the price of Valmets won't be going down any time soon

From a collectors perspective, these rifles will never go down in value unless they are also prohibited, or AK's have the prohibition order removed, or a company pulls off a BCL-102 stunt and manufactures a new mass produced near identical clone that maintains a NR status.

The only thing these new AK wannabes will do is slow down the number of tire kickers that Valmet sellers have to deal with before finding someone genuinely committed.

yeah, but the collector's market is rather very very small. only a handful on here can even shell out $5000 for a gun that will unlikely see much usage(too precious...).
 
I love my milled 308 m78!!! My second one! I passed on a m78 in 762-39 out of a collection three years ago for $4000!!! Ya dumbass right! Like I said, love the one I have but will not fork out the bucks for another. If you want to use it and shoot the crap outta her get something else. These are more of a collectors item now.

There is a cycle to it. Someone owned it for a while and sells its for $1000. The guy who buys it scoops it up for a deal and after the novelty wares off he sells it for $3000. The next owner does the same, but wants to make money off it too. So he sells it for $5000. Basically everyone is trying to make money of the NR AK so the price overinflates to the point were someone with more money than brains buys one for $10,000.

I wouldn't mind a M78 in 7.62NATO... haven't found a good deal but depending on dollar I will probably import it.

Aye. The unicorn gun gets shot more and more with next to no parts support at all and every owner tries to sell it for more than they paid after they have shot it and are done with it.
If this was a used car, people would call the buyer in the situation a moron.
I think it still applies here personally. Just my unpopular 2 cents. I would imagine anyone with enough money to spend $10K on a rifle just because it's rare in Canada is the type of person who can afford to have $10K just sitting above the mantel in his mahogany leisure room or something.
If anyone who actually owned a Valmet is actually shooting the thing more than once every half decade I would be surprised. The Valmets left in Canada are essentially collector show pieces to demonstrate how much disposable income you have (or may not have).
To me a Valmet is the best example of supply and demand I've ever seen. Only in this specific circumstance would anyone be whacked out enough (or rich enough) to drop 5 figures on a Kalashnikov clone lol

Travis, are you saying that current x39 Valmet owners are whacked out with a disposable income, use it as a showpiece, shoot it rarely and would want more money for it?? You are correct, but I could never sell mine though, it's nice to have "lifetime gun". It will age well in any collection given its quirky legal status and build quality. Would I buy a second? No, no need.

That's just my unpopular personal opinion lol
If I had a million in the bank, I still wouldn't drop $10K of it on an AK47 clone. In the end, after you strip away all the myth, lore, Canadian laws surrounding it etc etc that's what it is.
I wouldn't even drop $5K on it for exactly the same reasons but again that's just me.
Keep in mind here I'm just a lower middle class tax payer gun enthusiast though who also supports a family. Of course I can only attempt to project my low class tastes in a vain attempt to understand the mind of a man who sits around all day wondering what he should do with tens of thousands of disposable dollars to fill a void :D
 
It is worth what someone is willing to pay, It is simply supply and demand.

Demand is huge, supply is almost zero in Canada for sale at any time.


The are other rifles that command many times their retail in Canada because of the limited quantity, the swiss arms sniper, HK G36 and HK UMP come to mind as a few in the same catagory
 
Two auctions for Valmet 78 ended on the 17th. The 7.62x39 (stamped receiver, import marked, 2 mags, bayonet, etc) went for 6k, the 308 with a machined receiver had no takers at 2900 min bid.

You know there's a way to look at completed auctions, right? ;)
