Got home Thursday afternoon from a two day hunt in reg 3 with a buddy, he cut his mule deer buck tag with a nice 2 pt buck but nothing for me.

Got home dumped my gear and headed out in the rain to a nice cut block up the road I've been in a bit, lots of signs of through traffic and spotted a young fawn and doe prior to oct 10th. Got into my spot and sat down to wait by 4pm, wind in my face and ready to go. Just before dusk a big doe came in 100yds in front of me and was checking out my direction, she went behind a big tree root ball and I got ready. As she came out into the clear I dropped her with a shot and she jumped into the tree line, found the blood trail and 30yrds in found her down and dead. Shot her with my no.4 LB sporter, 150g S&B. Took out a lung and hit the heart and shattered her opposite leg just above the elbow as it exited.

Dark hit just before I had her fully gutted and I had an up hill drag to get her the 350yrds back to the truck, she was heavy and I earned that one lol. Got her home, washed her out, skinned and quartered her up. Thank god the cut block was pretty clear on the edge, would've been a brutal drag out if it was thicker or steeper. Couldnt be happier to have got my first deer and had it go down like it did, lots of meat on her with minimal shot damage. Ambushed on the ground without her knowing I was really there, doesn't get more Canadiana than putting meat in the freezer with a sportered No.4. The wife was pretty excited too boot, I'd post pics but haven't figured out a new hosting site since Photobucket crapped the bed.

Want to say thanks to everyone on here that shares tips and hunt stories, this is my second year hunting and I've gleaned a lot of info here as well as going with my instinct. Satisfying to have it all pay off, getting my boots on the ground and being out in the woods makes this even more satisfying.

Congratulations.

If I do my math right, it's been 47 years since my first, in October 1970.

I used a vintage 303 too; a Ross though.

Congratulations!! You will be reminded of this hunt every time you eat some of the meat.
Additionally, no matter how many deer you shoot in the future, you will always remember
this one fondly. Enjoy! D.

Thanks guys, I'm real happy about the way it went. Was pretty prepared for it but I definitely learned a few things that I can improve upon next time, mainly in getting it out of the woods when on my own lol. Have sat in the odd tree stand earlier in the season and I really prefer sitting on the ground in an ambush position, I enjoy watching the forest come alive once I get settled in and am still and quiet.

Will be butchering and cutting the quarters up tomorrow, looking forward to doing that end of the deal as well. Nice that I got the doe out of the way early, now I'll have till Nov 30th to try and find a whitetail buck. A buddy has seen a nice 4pt buck on his back property, maybe I'll get lucky and connect again.

On a side note, is there a good photo hosting site anyone is using from an iPhone? I have a couple pics I'd like to post of it.

Congrats! I also tagged my first whitetail this year and it really is an experience. Best of luck in finding that buck! I know I'm even more motivated to get out and keep hunting now.

Would love to see your photos. Try imgur:

I have always been a big fan of sitting and watching the world, staying quiet and seeing what moves about the place.

Aside from it being a heck of a way to settle out any stresses in one's life, before heading home after work, you can see some pretty cool, and sometimes funny stuff from the local wildlife.

Learning to sit still enough that the wildlife does not pay you much if any mind, has been a skill that took me a while to sort out. Mostly while bow hunting outside Moose Jaw.

Take good care of our eats. Enjoy!

More time out in the bush, usually amounts to more success, eh.

Cheers

Let see if imgur works. First pics is where I found her laying.

Hey BB - is that German pattern camo that you are rocking for pants?

You know it, its west German gortex rain gear I've had for years. I recently waxed it to get it back to 100% waterproof, wash in and spray on goretex specific products didn't do a lot to bring it back from the dead. Waxed it and it's like a duck in water, I've got jacket and pants. If you can find a set I highly recommend them, they work great and are a perfect camp for BC in the fall.

Ha - figured. I have a pair of pants from West Germany and the spot type pattern is v. similar but what I have isn't the gortex combo that you are using. Will keep my eyes open. So now you have number one under your belt, are you back in the field.....
