Best Shotgun to start off with?

Do not buy a Remington 870. I cannot stress that enough.
That's funny, cuz with over 10 million sold, there must be a lot of unhappy 870 shooters out there.

From Wiki .......

Sales of the 870 have been steady. They reached two million guns by 1973 (ten times the number of Model 31 shotguns it replaced). As of 1983, the 870 held the record for best-selling shotgun in history with three million sold.[5] By 1996, spurred by sales of the basic "Express" models, which were added as a lower-cost alternative to the original Wingmaster line, sales topped seven million guns. On April 13, 2009, the ten millionth Model 870 was produced.

Hi im new to the firearm scene. I purchased my first firearm but have yet to shoot it. Ive been to a range before i got my PAL just to try out different firearms. Ive been looking online and ive seen some cheaper shotguns such as the canuck series, but all ive seen is to try and get a remmington 870 or mossberg 500?

Im new to this, so any experience or insights on these arms would be helpful.

is there anyone near you who can let you shoot some various guns? Reading everyone has their opinions, no one will be able to tell what gun you like until you fire it.

Mossberg 500 or Benelli Supernova. Do not buy a Remington 870. I cannot stress that enough.

Real clear to me you have never owned a wingmaster or if you owned an express had a clue how to take care of it

Bought my first wingmaster in 1965 and it still looks and works today as it did then. Never a minute's problem and fired 1000's of rounds. It is good for another 50 years plus. Let's see your supernova do that. My first express bought new in 1987 and again no issues. Is it pretty NO but it goes bang every time I pull the trigger and doesn't jam either

Cheers

And there it is, just as I predicted. Comparing a 870 Wingmaster to a 870 Express or Mossberg 500. A Wingmaster is $1000 at Cabela's, an Express is $500. They are not the same gun, so why are you comparing them? The original question was regarding cheap shotguns. If we are going into the $1000 range, I am sure that would open up a lot of doors, some better than a Wingmaster.

The current 870 Express are not great guns, I've owned 2, both gone now. I have heard that the Chinese knock offs are sometimes better quality than the current Remingtons.

Next up, the buy a used Wingmaster argument. The original question didn't ask about used 50 year old guns with fixed full chokes.
If we are going to open this up to any old gun on the EE, I am sure there will be lots of options. As Justin Trudeau would say "Because it's 2017". I will add, it's not 1965 anymore, quality control is not what it once was, unfortunately.

I only commented to a statement made about 870's and compared it to a 500 or super nova. Both of which I did own new examples of over the years with the 535 being my last new mossy. Talk about a rattle trap. Ever look for parts for a Nova. Good luck
I fixed my post for you to include the express. HAPPY NOW

You predicted nothing . But since you brought the express up I also own a batch of express in fact 6 of them in various gauges ( 410, 28, 16 and three 12ga) and all of those also work just fine . Maybe just maybe it is the owner that gives the 870 express it's problems . That would be my guess. By the way my 50 year old wingmaster doesn't have fixed chokes it has tubes fitted. In fact very few of my many 870's are still fixed choke other than the 410's and a couple of the 28ga and a set or so of 4 gun 870 skeet. Even most of the the 16's were converted by briley. It is not big money or a huge deal for a lifetime gun to get tubes fitted
So please tell me again what you really know about 870's your comments are based on owning TWO express it seems and yes I have always did my own work also like you. Which was a given since I grew up with a gunsmith for a dad and worked in his shop

I also have a few made in the mid 2000's and there is nothing wrong with the quality of those either but again they are wingmasters
Any how you and your 500 can carry on and I am glad it makes you happy as my 870's do for me. By the way I have no issues with the vintage 500's and own one a 16ga. I held onto the 410 mossy 500 for a lot of years but that too when compared to a 870 410 was another loose rattle trap so was sold also
Cheers

Lots of hate for the 870 on here. I have 6 870s two wing masters and the rest are newer production in 12, 20, and 410. All work as they should and I've never had a issue I run almost nothing but 3 1/2 steel thought my 12ga express and she still works just fine. I also own a 500 and a 590a1 both exalent guns. So I guess what I'm trying to say is buy what you find on sale for your first shotgun you don't need to spend a lot to get a good reliable shotgun.

You predicted nothing .

Actually I did.

Before anyone chimes in and says "oh ya, that's the Express. The Wingmaster is a great gun" Look at the price of a Wingmaster, not a fair comparison. Second argument will be to get a used Wingmaster. If you want a 40 year old gun with fixed full choke, that is definitely an option.

It happens in every "What shotgun should I buy" thread.

The rattle of the Mossberg doesn't bother me. When I am using the gun I simply pull the pump back, then push forward, no need for lateral twisting. Only time the rattle is a issue is when someone twists it side to side, then complains about the rattle. Not an issue during actual use. Maybe that's what I was doing wrong with the 870, are you supposed to twist it side to side as you pump?

870 IS the best answer to these threads. If you don't know enough or explain enough for special circumstances to be evident, then the big mac of shotguns is the best option. Just the aftermarket factor pushes it beyond the comparables. If someone new asks about a first time shotgun and you say the 870 is a bad option you don't know what you are talking about.

Buy an 870 used or new. By the time you figure out what else you want you will know enough to be thankful you went the 870 route at first.

I like my Benelli Nova as a fairly inexpensive starter shotgun. It cycles any shells no problem and is easy to break down to clean.

Recently however, it had misfired. I took it apart and cleaned the firing pin. Hoping that solves the issue as I missed a couple pheasants because of it.

The above pretty much nails it. The first gun I ever purchased was a 12ga Wingmaster. Even though many more guns have come and gone, I still own it. It has gone through many changes over the years and is now a dedicated slug gun, but it always endures due to all of the aftermarket accessories and parts for it. Its simply the most versatile and adaptable platform out there for a shotgun and it can be reasonably changed to fit any shooter or application.

For sure. One thing you will never see here if you own a 870 is

1. Hey guys I was just wondering where I can find some replacement parts for my super nova. I tried stoger As they are a rep but no luck. Any other suggestions?

2. Hope you have better luck
I got one email back with part numbers and price. Emailed them back to give cc info and never heard back. 3 emails and 4 phone calls with voice mails. Still haven't had a reply.

Cheers

I own an 870 Express Deer, and the rear sight busted off and gashed my head. Then the finish started rusting (even though I coated it in ballistol). Then it stopped feeding Remington high brass shells. That is to say it wouldn't take the rounds out of the magazine. This is all within 100 rounds of me buying it.

Remington is not what it once was, and I hope they either change or go out of business. With their recent changes in leadership and firings, I'm guessing the latter.

ovrec say it isnt so....
Barnes Bullets owned by R O C ???
Oh my goodness.
Anyways, the 870 Express that I have owned never had the amount of troubles as one previous owner has experienced.
Nor have I owned a Marlin since the Remington merger or takeover if you wiil.
The two Expresses didnt like the salt marsh air much, so they where regulated to upland game for a time before I decided to move them along.
Did have to polish the chamber on them though, but thats a long time ago now.

Recommendations and Whats the best (insert gun brand here) rarely reach a consensus of whats what in the real world.
Everyone has an opinion and some stink and am sure others feel my experience smells .

^^^Very true.

I have a post merger Marlin .22 and it's been awesome, fit and finish is great and it's almost succeeded in the 1/2" @ 50yrd challange. It can shoot it but I have to be on point lol. I just bought a 870 Express 3 barrel combo, it's put together nicely. Fit and finish is nice, all three barrels mate snuggly in the reciever. The action is pretty damn smooth (way smoother than some I've cycled), it should smooth out nicely with use. I'm going to polish the chambers on each barrel and then shoot it, keep it oiled as I've had experience with the phosphate black finish before. Was reading somewhere about using a light coat of furniture paste wax on this kind of finish with success. Might have to try it on my 12.5" grizzly barrel, it has a light surface rust where fingerprints are sometimes.

My grandfather told me one great piece of advice about guns...... if you really want to learn how to shoot, buy a single shot!!!
Now why would anyone suggest that? .............Cause when you only got one shot, you learn quickly how to make it count.

Not saying you have too, just passing along some advice.

Remington is not doing well financially these days. People are moving away from their rifles and shotguns, and asides from the 1911's they make, they can't release a pistol that works. Thanks Freedom Group.
