I shot a nice buck tonight with my CZ 527 in 7.62x39. Range was about 90 yards and the deer was quartering away from me. At the shot, the deer disappeared into the woods. I waited a couple minutes but since dark was coming fast, I started checking the field for signs of a good hit and eventually found some blood. The deer only travelled about 35 yards but it was now dark and thankfully I had a light with me because it took about 20 minutes to cover that distance while following the blood drops on the wet leaves and ground. Deer was dead when I found it. When I dressed out the deer, I found the round had entered the middle ribs area and angled forward, exiting tight behind the offside leg. That’s pretty much what I aimed for. Both lungs had been hit as well as a rib on the entry side. I was shooting Federal Fusion soft points. I was impressed that the bullet fully passed through the deer on that angle and surprised at the amount of blood shot around the exit hole. I usually hunt with a 6.5 Swede with Nosler partitions but have taken quite a few deer over the years with rounds varying from the .32 Special, .250 Savage, to a .270. The would channel looked more like a high velocity round than the .30-30/.32 Special, etc.

I’m a reloader so only used the Federal rounds as I was pushed for time and just got the CZ. Based on what I saw tonight, I’m impressed with the little rifle and round. It packs light but hits pretty hard! Today, I loaned the rifle to a friend’s daughter who is hoping to get her first deer this fall. It’s a good thing that I also have a 527 carbine in .223 to shoot!

Good job and thanks for your report on the effectiveness of the 7.62X39 cartridge and Fusion ammunition... this data will get plugged into the CGN collective consciousness.

I can’t believe that I actually bought and used a rifle chambered for that “sks round” but both the rifle and round are pretty neat and appear to be a just right combination for normal hunting. My only caution is to glass bed, or at least really closely inspect the bedding of any 527 in 7.62x39. I bought mine gently used and it looked ok but the stock split bad within my first box of Barnaul fmj ammunition. I was able to repair it respectively well and also installed pillars but I highly recommend proper glass bedding support and tang clearance on any 527. My .223 version appears fine and there haven’t been many reports of damaged stocks in that caliber but there is a significant trend in 7.62.

Other feedback is that I bought medium rings, both Talley and Burris to try. I mounted an old 2.5-8 Simmons on the 7.62 and a 2-7 Leupold compact on the .223. In both cases there is at least 1/4” clearance between the bolt and scope so an even lower ring might be ok with standard size optics.

Great deer round............ I load 123gr SP/25gr- H4198/Privi cases/Fed mag primers for deer [two kills] And Speer .311 /150gr can be used for heavier game with the same powder or the IMR version. The mag primers cut groups in 1/2 from standard .Also loaded 93gr cast Tokarev pistol bullet over 2.7gr of Bullseye for chickens at 900 fps/standard primers.Harold

Nice, I'm taking mine out with the little privi round noses for white tails this coming week, can't wait. Love this gun

Mbogo3,

Which 123 grain soft point are you using and how has it performed?
Hornady SP blew the heart out of one WT buck at 30 yards and exited .............bangflop. Other buck 125 yards double lung exited ......deer ran 30 yards and face plant.Nice little round. The Sierra .311/150gr shot under an inch as well but never introduced them to any game yet.Perhaps moose or black bear over bait. Also loaded some 123gr Barnes TSX but no game with them either....I believe the mini 30 has a .308 bore but you can use either bullet ie .310......Harold

Buddies daughter shot two deer last fall with the Ukranian bi-metal Dominion 123gr HP's .A WT buck at 50 yards in the neck[tells nothing as to bullet performance] and a mulie doe at 200 yards through the lungs ......no bullet recovered.Doe made it 3 body lengths and crashed.

Congrats on your success. I also enjoyed carrying my CZ527 this last week however failed to fire a shot or put up any deer.

The rifle is light and can be carried in so many comfortable positions. I had been using a SKS last year and K98 for moose so this gun was a featherweight. Put a 2-7x vortex scope on it which seemed perfect for the 25 to 75m range I'd typically see. Longest shot I would have felt comfortable taking would have been about 150m. It came out with barely a mark on it and I didn't baby the gun. The rubber buttpad is great very quiet to set down as required. I will take this out again next year for sure, hopefully next year I will be to use it.

Things I noticed that I can accept and learned but is good info for new users of this rifle. I carried it for 6 days in the field for sits and pushes.
- safety on right side of the rear trim of the receiver. Good it is quiet and can be worked with your thumb. Bad is carrying left handed or without due care clothing or branches could potentially disable it. Always maintain muzzle safety, I experienced no malfunction despite my concern it held very firm. My point is do no trust this safety with anything important as "they" always say.
-magazine is single stack control feed, you can not too load this rifle. Suggest a 2nd magazine for the woods.
-this rifle required over 100 rounds fired at the ranfe before i began to see any accuracy at all, in fact the first 20-30rds saw half of them bounce out of the chamber if not cycled with force. I thought I had a serious lemon. 200rds in (surplus because I was mad)the gun started Landing where I was aiming and it's shot tighter groups every magazine since. I also sat up and cycled the bolt for a while one night after cleaning it. Prepare to break in this rifle.

Mine shot 1/2" right out of the box with handloads . Never shot corrosive in mine nor ever will .The N/C military stuff is nothing to write home about for precision .H4198 is the cat's PJ's and RE#7 was next followed by Win 748.Cheap as shooting a .223 miserly on powder.Shot some old Norma .311 /130gr well too.

x39 used for Russian Bear hunting, as in their bigger species of Brown Bear? Now that would be quite a stunt! Or death wish?

"1. Recommended rifle caliber - 300 Win Mag, 375 H&H, 9,3*64 (Brenneke)."

"Larger caliber magnum cartridges in 325-375 range are recommended. 300 Winchester Magnum , should be the minimum."

http://russianbearhunt.com/

the locals are not using that kind of calibers ... bears in russia are not only in kamtchaka ....

The locals do not have a lot of disposable income and they use what they have including mosins, SKS and often Baikal and Toz double shotguns. They are not really sport hunting and have adapted the use of what is readily available. Most shots are close and the 7.62x39 is effective.

They used to use PPSH's and smoke out hibernating brown bears from their dens. Lots of excitement there although not sporting.Harold
