I shot a nice buck tonight with my CZ 527 in 7.62x39. Range was about 90 yards and the deer was quartering away from me. At the shot, the deer disappeared into the woods. I waited a couple minutes but since dark was coming fast, I started checking the field for signs of a good hit and eventually found some blood. The deer only travelled about 35 yards but it was now dark and thankfully I had a light with me because it took about 20 minutes to cover that distance while following the blood drops on the wet leaves and ground. Deer was dead when I found it. When I dressed out the deer, I found the round had entered the middle ribs area and angled forward, exiting tight behind the offside leg. That’s pretty much what I aimed for. Both lungs had been hit as well as a rib on the entry side. I was shooting Federal Fusion soft points. I was impressed that the bullet fully passed through the deer on that angle and surprised at the amount of blood shot around the exit hole. I usually hunt with a 6.5 Swede with Nosler partitions but have taken quite a few deer over the years with rounds varying from the .32 Special, .250 Savage, to a .270. The would channel looked more like a high velocity round than the .30-30/.32 Special, etc.
I’m a reloader so only used the Federal rounds as I was pushed for time and just got the CZ. Based on what I saw tonight, I’m impressed with the little rifle and round. It packs light but hits pretty hard! Today, I loaned the rifle to a friend’s daughter who is hoping to get her first deer this fall. It’s a good thing that I also have a 527 carbine in .223 to shoot!
