These guys are making us all look bad.

All the police can charge him with is trespassing. Hunting regulations are governed my MNR, who are still investigating, and charges could still be laid under the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act.

I hope so. There must be laws regarding hunting within a certain distance of occupied buildings that he could be charged for.

Yes... he could be charged with illegally discharging a firearm within 100 m of a private residence. .... which in theory could be pretty bad. Don't be surprised if the something isn't coming down the pipes.

Otherwise why not just drive the back roads shooting at game? Just a $100 fine, why not then?

This guy thought pot belly pigs were wild boars? He didn't clue in when they let him walk up to them point blank and shoot them? Sounds like a pea brain.

It was a pre-emptive strike, they were going to be wild boars... eventually... small ones.

Without sounding Preachy; joking about the pet being killed is sorta...callous. We had one of the Viet's, initially to my chagrin...he was actually pretty cool in hindsight.
But while he was fine existing around the place ( acreage in the country ); he wasn't going to make it as a feral boar. A 250-300 pound animal with 6" clearance ( and he wasn't really fat...he grazed the yard all summer...pigs can exist on grass, but they don't get fat) isn't going to make it in the wild. Heck; a set of stairs could defeat him, he was like a 4 x 4 on donut spare tires lol.
Big body, no clearance.
They can be affectionate as a dog, weird to most folks... but true. The 'Nimrod' should feel like a fool at the very least. Reminds me of 'Nimrods' shooting our Peking Ducks swimming on the dugout in July, like... WTF? My father would have duked it out on the side of the road had they been dumb enough to stop instead of fleeing.
I'd say the Nimrod ought to get a 5 year hunting suspension, he's lacking too many skills at it IMO. Wheeling around with a rifle shooting the wrong species...sorry, you are benched for a year or 5.

Thats really disgusting that a guy who tresspasses and admits to killing non game animals at point blank range can not be charged with careless use of a firearm.

Hopefully the MNR throws the book at the guy. Nothing avout thamis situation is an honest mistake.

Funny I dont remember a lot of talk of feral pigs in eastern Ontario on my hunting course.

Homeowner comes home to find pets killed by Illegal armed tresspassers. Those guys are lucky they are in Canada. In Most of the US those guys would be right where they belong under the tree with the pigs.

Is that a "no hunting/firearm discharge zone"? The rural areas of Ottawa are large and discharge zones literally change every 100 m. I was at a friend's in rural Ottawa... Looked up if we could shoot on their property. Nope... But the neighbouring property? Yes. I guess ppl with half a brain look this stuff up.

Bottom line is that guy was technically trespassing, didn't identify game property, and discharged a firearm within 100m of a private dwelling. There's lots there for the MNR to smoke him with. Not saying the guy needs to go to jail, but maybe a few grand the owners way and removal from hunting for a few years. He needs to take the hunting course again it seems as well.

There is lots the police could have charged him with as well, Using a firearm in the commission of an indictable offence, Careless use/discharge, and Theft, to name a few. The failure of police to do anything significant here is probably the most disturbing part of the story.

I heard on the news today that all he can be charged with is trespassing which is a $100.00 fine. That seems like not much of a deterrent. In Saskatchewan he would have a larger fine and lose his hunting privileges for at least one year, which is still not much of a deterrent.

Ten bucks says there is more to this story then the half true gossip found on the internet.

When non gun owners read this they'll think "what if that was my child some stupid hunter mistakes for an animal."

Think they'll be in a hurry to support us crying about new gun laws? Nope.
