I do not claim to be a long range shooter. In fact most that frequent this thread will likely yawn at the distance I will want to shoot this set up at. But hunting most of my shots have been under 100yds and only a couple up to 200. That said want to stretch out a little further to start. My local range goes out to 400. Thing is I am not in the best of health and shake a little more than most might due to health and meds. That said I also have started reloading so that has me wanting to stretch my skills a bit. I have been shooting for 20-25 years but have never had any bolt rifle more expensive or set up than an average hunting Tikka T3/Ruger M77 MKII .30-06 with a Bushnell or Leupold 3-9 or 4-12 etc over the years.

Lately I have been smacking the smaller gong with my .30-06 at 400 yds and it has given me the bug to get a little better rig. I am on disability and wanted something that I could still possibly take hunting as well and not be a beast. So I just purchased a Remington 700 Urban Tac .308 with 20" barrel and Warn scope rail and HS Precision stock from SFRC during their Black Friday sale today. I am pairing it with a Zeiss Conquest HD5 3-15X42 scope with Z-600 reticle that I got one sale from Reliable Gun for a couple hundred off and a set of Warne Tactical rings. Will it serve me well for what I have intended? I will never be reaching out real far maybe up to 600 or so target shooting, but is it a good balance between value and performance? It has the 1-12 twist barrel what would be the best bullet weight to focus on for accuracy? Personally I think it will be more precise than I will ever be able to be, but wanted some feedback and your guys thoughts on it. I don't have it in my possession or set up yet so no pics hopefully not a problem ;)

PS: Also is the Warne scope rail that comes with the Urban Tac a 20 MOA rail or 0 MOA? It didn't say in any of the info from those selling it. Thanks

If your rail is thicker on one end,it should be 20 MOA.
I believe the thicker end goes to the rear.

That scope should be fine for 400 yards.

I just recently shot a moose ,at 250 yrds.
Scope was on 5 power.

I prefer to dial my scope, rather than use holdovers.

The setup you've got will be good, no problem out to 400 yards. Quality ammo can make a big difference for consistency, the cheap stuff can be a mixed bag.

I am new to reloading but will work up loads for it myself. I have some commercial .308 to burn up but can use that in my BCL 102 when I get it or my Ruger Scout rifle.

Get a box of Federal Gold Medal Match 168 or 175 grain.
Shoot 5 shot groups at 100 or 200 yards.

That will give you a good benchmark for what MOA your rifle will shoot, and a goal for your handloads.

Your Set-up should be good, 1 in 12 Twist I would use 168gr projectiles for the best all around performance. Also I would use the 20 MOA rail as it will give you more useable elevation in your turret as you start shooting longer distances.

Thanks for the feedback. I have 168 Sierra Matchkings, 168 Speer Target Match and Hornady 168 Match bullets as well that I will try. I will see what it will do with 150's as well. Will get some 175 gr as well to try. Excited to stretch my legs with this platform and see what she can do. I ordered a Timney trigger for it and it should arrive soon.
