Question for Hunt and camp boss's - hunting drama

unfortunately all I can say is modify your screening process . Maybe consider opening up to other people . a friend of mine rents out an old cabin property he has . Has had success with bow hunters and a group of black powder guys . But he also rents out in off hunting season to a couple of families and rents out a few times a year to a group of guys that come up from the city and do what we call Extreme RC car and truck adventures

Your friend is not running a hunt camp.... he is running a business.... for those of us that have a camp that we participate in, we know the difference....

Some bad apples and the high cost made me give up Moose hunting

Im looking for a place to hunt deer/ turkey with my wife for next year and not having much luck -- some of it spoiled by some bad apples, or not liking what i see when I do a look around

where I was hunting when I got Hitched got sold so been looking for a good place another place (public) got a road through it

Thanks for the replies, I'm not glad other people have issues but at least it's a bit of a relief to know it's not just me.

I'm not looking to make money. The friends who go up with me and use the place refuse to not donate money every year towards the bills and upkeep so I don't feel right not having the hunters chip in too. Pricing it out I could ask 4-quite a bit and have had some big offers.

I've considered some kind of contract but in the past some bonehead made a big stink about getting his name on the ownership too because he was paying to use the camp so felt like he should be a part-owner which was just annoying.

Serious questions for Hunt Boss's and Camp Boss's, or even huters I guess.

Does anyone else have problems with overly dramatic hunters or constant drama surrounding hunting, group dynamics or use of their cabins/property?

In my case as far as hunting goes the apple fell far from the tree. I don't like hunting at all, I'm not a hunter. The last time I shot an animal was 22 years ago and I stopped fake hunting with my dad about 10 years ago.

So that said I still come from a family of hunters and inherited a hunting cabin and while I use it for recreation I still want to see the cabin used for it's intended purpose too.
...edited out...

Am I just having #### luck? The cabin sleeps 16 in a prime hunting location, I want to support hunting and hunters but it hardly feels worth the frustration. From what I understand cabins and hunting grounds are in high demand, I don't get it.

Hi GuiltySpark: I really admire the fact that you do not hunt but allow the camp to be used for hunting, its intended purpose. That is commendable.
To maintain that perspective please roll with the frustration a little, because it will be ever-present. Even within close-knit hunting groups issues will arise. Newbies, rednecks, and differences in understanding of camp rules or hunting ethics never cease. It comes with the turf. Seen it all over 45 years in a hunt camp. Keep whittling out the bad dudes or teaching respect, and keep the tradition alive. Thank you.

The guy who wanted part ownership was extremely dense.

What you want is not a "contract" in a rigid, legal sense, but rather a "rental agreement." Outline a series of reasonable rules and guidelines that "renters" agree to prior to accepting a rental agreement... it would also outline what you are offering and what you are not offering, including facilities and property boundaries and duration of use.

good hearted folk like yerself are usually the ones that get screwed, I find myself in the same group. Personally, in my experience, once the line has been crossed and I know that im being taken advantage of..it comes to a stop..and noone gets to have fun. stand yer ground.

In many instances the added costs for cleanup, damages and not following the property rules is the only way to keep some individuals in line. Kind of like how locks only keep honest people honest

I guess my situation is different.... we have “rules”, but they are focused on safety and keeping the camp clean and leaving it as you found it....

The guys at my camp are made up of guys that were in the camp before I bought it as well as a few guys that joined over the years... we are at a point now where some of our kids are starting to hunt and take part in camp.... it’s pretty rewarding.... everyone shoulders their share and chips in, brings generator gas, helps with upkeep etc.....

Sure, some guys were booted after I bought the place, but I have very few issues now.... in fact, I did “campsgiving” this year and cooked a 20 pound bird with all of the fixings for 17 people....

It depends if you want to run a business or you want to run a camp....

As for “camp boss”, I see it as my responsibility to organize things, help keep everyone safe and have the “tough talks” should someone not pull their weight or is acting irresponsibly.... it’s not about ordering people around....

Put it this way.... we all know how hard it can be to find a good hunting partner.... imagine how hard it would be to find 10 without a few basic ground rules....

Considering the cost of land and taxes out west, if you wanted to purchase a few hundred acres and run a camp, you would go broke pretty quick if you were doing it all for free

That’s likely a big part of why hunt camps are more of an eastern thing..... cheap land and a lack of crown land sure makes running a camp a more exciting prospect.....

if land is cheap and available, why is there always people posting they have no place to hunt out east?

Because most hunters I meet only hunt one or two weeks a year and don’t want to make an investment.... or they are too lazy to ask permission..... (I see lots of that on here)....

70% of Ontario is crown land..

True, but lots of that is either protected or unreachable without some serious effort and investment.... and the majority that is accessible or not crowded is a good hike northward.... not a problem for those willing to do it and set up camp etc... just not for everybody...

If you are willing to hike in 5 KMs into the woods, you'll be alone. A canoe and a good set of boots helps too.
