To me it sounds like a big sneeze. Not what I am hearing in the vid
The spotted deer danger call in the video is a vocalization. I believe Whitetail deer are actually blowing air out their nose very rapidly to make their danger call. It could be that they are trying to smell danger? Yes, this is why some people refer to it as a snort.
I've heard both does and young bucks make a call that sounds very similar to the chital in the video ( and when you hear that it means you're busted). Is that what everybody is referring to as a snort?
I've haven't yet heard a big buck make that sound though.
Thats quite a squeal. Lol Alot different than A whitetail and I've unfortunately heard too many whitetail snorts.
Alright, I'll try to hit the bush over Christmas with a camera and get some video of a whitetail making the sound I'm talking about. Definitely a vocalization, similar, but deeper and raspier than the deer in the video.
I guess we will have to disagree on the snort, what I've seen, and I guarantee I have seen and heard at least as many as you have, tells me a different story. It's clearly used to clear their noses, if you watch them do it, they always sniff the air right after a session. What you are referring to as a "snort" would more accurately be called "blowing." It is solely an alarm sound... deer will often stand alert while blowing repeatedly, then may prance off and blow as they depart. Bucks do snort and snort wheeze and have numerous grunts that convey different messages. I generally mix in snort wheezes and tending grunts during rattling sequences. I have rattled and called in dozens of bucks over the years. I have one little overgrown clearing in a valley that I call "The Colosseum." I have watched bucks battling in that location for decades. On one frosty morning I watched three separate battles going on simultaneously.
