I guess we will have to disagree on the snort, what I've seen, and I guarantee I have seen and heard at least as many as you have, tells me a different story. It's clearly used to clear their noses, if you watch them do it, they always sniff the air right after a session.

Yes, we will have to disagree...

I've been talking to deer for 40 years... there are dozens of vocalizations that they make at various times, and at different times of the year. As for deer "blowing," I disagree with you, they are not "clearing their noses," they are most definitely issuing a warning call to other deer.

they kinda are clearing their noses...trying to get the human smell out... :)
...and announcing to the whole forest that danger is nigh

The words "deer", "doe" and " buck" are all made from the sounds they make - I think.
Does say dooooooe.
Deer say deeeeeer.
A buck following a does trail will say buuuck...... buuuuck ......buuuuuck as he sniffs his way along her trail.
I've heard a young doe bleating something awful as she is being chased by a big buck. She ran out into the field crying with the buck near behind and then back into the trees - there was no consentual relationship there.

Puffing is common - meant maybe to get a recognizable reaction from something that they don't recognize.

The dooooe or deeeeer sounds are just "hey where is every one? I'm over here." They will say it once, then wait for a reply. Making a single call will relax deer around and they may come out to feed, believing that others are nearby. If they say it more than once, it becomes a distress call - which might bring a motherly doe out to investigate - maybe spooked, but curious. Multiple deeeer calls might bring out a boy in the rut, but will upset the ambiance in the area.

I have heard a whitey doe scream out a warning like an out of tune trumpet at 2 feet.

True story.
Was elk hunting, standing in the rain under a tree. All you could hear was the rain pouring down.
I stood silent and not moving for around 10 minutes, until i turned to my left and there was a white tail doe standing right beside me. And i mean right beside me. She let out a horrible scream and bolted through the bush. I damn near #### my pants. Im blind on my left side so pretty much anything can sneak up on me coming from my left.
Funniest damn thing i have ever experienced hunting.

Had a mulie doe walk right up to us within 5 ft on a pipeline to check us out then walked around in front of us for over an hour as we were not a perceived threat.Funny how they know your intentions.

They also know if you don't have a tag. Every hunting season most of my sightings are for animals I don't have tags for.
