So for some weird reason I bought a MG34 and now I need to load for it ;)

So I did some research and I keep seeing 198gr FMJ

Just want to know from the pros here that have a MG34 what powder works best for them :)

Im looking to reload 2000 rounds over Xmas and dont want to buy the wrong stuff...lol..

-PRVI BRASS 8mm MAUSER (8X57) UNPRIMED
-PRVI BULLET 8MM (.323) 198GR FMJBT
- CCI PRIMER M34

Im new to reloading and I want to take it slow and steady, I only got into reloading because of my Cadex and that press had great reviews :)

I would probably just use regular large rifle primers. NATO spec primers are harder. No idea what the firing pin strike is like on a mg34, but it's always a more reliable bet to go with softer than harder.

IMR/H4895, Varget, IMR4064, W748 are some of the powders that would work well. The 8mm Mauser is comparable to the 30-06 for powder choice.

I think this should get you started - sorry for crappy pictures.

I wonder if you can get someone to make you some cast bullets?

the MG34 hates hard primers and can only run FMJ. You should get a 308 conversion kit just for the ability to run 308 you can pick up anywhere if your low on 8mm.

I hope that you will be able to reload at least some of those PPU cases once fired. The MG34 is incredibly hard on brass, it bangs the cases into a flattened oval from about mid-way to the case mouth.

A club member has an MG34 (and two 1919s) and the 8mm PPU brass is only good for the scrap bin which is a real pity as he shoots hundreds of them during the summer months and donates them to the club.

That's a good deal at a buck-a-pop even though they are Berdan primed.

If I were you, I'd buy two or three boxes of PPU and try them out to see if you consider them to be reloadable but I have my doubts. Upon ejection, the case shoulder takes a very hard hit and collapses the case into a flat and offset oval. I tried to resize a few of them because I hate to see good brass go to waste - hopeless task that it was.

There is one thing for certain, you will have a blast with that MG34, enjoy!

I hope so, I even told Wolverine to take it out and run it before they ship it to me to be sure its 100% :)

So I guess if they damage the brass that bad its not worth the 308 conversion kit that I was looking at. that will be 1$ a pop as well. So buying that surplus from CanAm seems the way to go.

I reload for mine all the time, both 8mm and 308
You don't need FMJ bullets I have used speer, sierra, hornady, ect
you can use 170 grain up to 200 grain and they work fine, that's what I have used anyway and have had no issues
Ive had good results using IMR 4350, 4064 and 4320 powder
The PPU brass is good and yeah the gun does beat them up a bit but I've gotten 4 to 5 reloads per brass which is decent. I could probably get more but I use the brass for my mausers after the 4 to 5 uses in the 34
Since you will be reloading I suggest you get rid of the factory flat wind coil spring that TNW uses for a firing pin spring and get an original german one. The gun will be easier to ####, will run way better and have an easier trigger pull
Once you get your 34, or even ask wolverine before they ship it to you to make sure your ejector timing is proper. If its not you will destroy brass and have ejection issues.
One more thing, make sure the belts are not too tight, meaning that the rounds slip in and out without tremendous force as that can cause stoppages as well
If you want a good read pick up Folke Myrvangs book on german universal machineguns
