Wholesale sports sale

Just an observation; this sale is going to be really hard on local retailers at this time of year.

Can't blame buyers or WSS for the timing but there will be a lot of guns etc. going unsold at LGS over the Christmas run up that they were counting on to salvage a less than spectacular year.

Hope that they manage to pull through.

Absolutely true.
I think I heard one of the gun counter guys at Calgary WSS say they had sold a few thousand guns in the last little while and I don't doubt it. The gun counter was crazy every time I was in there.
A lot of folks have picked up another gun or two with the great prices and won't be back in the market again anytime soon.
Hopefully the LGS can deal with this until the market gets back to normal.

On the other hand, starting next year they have one less competitor to worry about. That will affect their relationship with both distributors and customers.

On a side note, I understand they were a large player in the areas they were present, but in Ontario, Quebec and Atlantic, they were nonexistent. That's about 70% of the canadian population. For LGS in these provinces, it's just one e-competitor that's shut its doors a while ago. WSS might have had an impact locally, but for the country overall, it's not really an issue.

Thanks kc and Vinny, we'll see how it plays out.

I see Frontier already has a bunch of new long guns listed. Cherry picked the good ones I bet. Oh well.

I was there the day the Frontier guy was in Saskatoon. I over heard him saying, I'll take all your restricted. And he asked about a couple rifles as well if u can remember correctly... I bought something that I wasn't there to buy that day based on what I overheard.

Maybe the local Calgary stores will put up some real sale for once. For way too long they rely on the oil and gas money and was pretty arrogant with the "if you don't buy it someone else will" mentallity. they never needed to compete for the business because people were willing to pay and get stuff right away. it is finally now showing some slow down but only time can tell.

You need to get real.

Local gunshops don't get to go directly to a large distributor or manufacturer and ask for a special price on a couple of thousand firearms. At 40+% off, that's likely very close or maybe below the same cost your LGS pays for those same firearms. They aren't in business to break even or lose money. They have to make a profit to survive.

IMHO the prices on firearms at places such as WSS, Cabela's etc are one of the reasons firearms prices at LGSs are on the high side.

Our local gun shops are very competitive and usually even cheaper than the big box stores.

firearms are low profit margin items that tie up a good % of a LGS's inventory. Sell a rifle and hopefully an optic, some scope mounts, a sling, swivels, a gun case, pack of targets, and some ammo. This is where the the better margins are, which help to raise the gross profit of the transaction to a point where the LGS can keep their doors open. Also where customers would like discounts or throw ins. :)

Was in the Kamloops WSS today, pretty slim pickens.

Bought a small handful of fishing tackle that I knew I'd use, and pondered a few other things I didn't really need.

50 percent off what was left of the powders. Couple 8 pound jugs of H380 were left, along with a bunch of BP substitute stuff. Didn't need an 8 of H380, though...

Langley BC is pretty picked over, too.
Yesterday (Sat 23rd) had large areas of empty shelves cordoned off, and remaining stock all pushed into a smaller area.

From another thread...

Usually, 7.5x55 Swiss ammo is hard to find, and expensive when you do find it.
But Wholesale Sports is in their final closeout days, and everything is 70% off!
They now sell it by the 60 round box rather than the 480 round (8 boxes) crate.
For a 60 round box, it is now only $16.49 !
I got 40 boxes, equivalent to 5 crates. :)

Langley still has lots as of 10AM today
