Any love for Ruger Security/Service Six?

So my 6” barrel showed up and it looks pretty good. Nicer than the photos.

Now I just need to find a blued Service Six.

Show us what you’ve got. Especially if it’s been customized. Love looking at these things.

Not cutomized too heavily, hogue grips and trigger job. Light crisp single action and slick double action. Double action is a loooong pull though. I won't sell this gun. It makes me shoot too well haha.

I like the look of them. Never handled one but I have a Redhawk I like very much so if I ever decide I have enough money and enough time to shoot it that I can add another restricted, a seller of a Security or Service Six would have a good chance with me.

Cheers! I've got this the other way around, have the Security Six, now looking for a Redhawk.

Well Leg,

I am aware of a blued Security-Six, 4" barrel (however, with adjustable sights) for sale. Of course, I would like to get it, but would need to re-barrel it as well, as I do not have 12(6) privileges. If you are interested, I can send you the details. If you are not, I would be grateful to you and to any others who would let me know of availability of longer barrels.

Yes the later ones are quite a bit larger, also easier to find aftermarket grips for. Mine was manufactured in 1985, so late production. Here is how it looks in its original grips, sorry for the dark picture:

I hope you don't mind if I ask, but how much should something like that be worth today?

Thanks everyone.

I have a Security Six in .357 with a 4" barrel. I carried a S&W .38 spl with a 4" barrel for several years but I am a big Ruger fan. I like the Ruger's beefy frame and style. It fits my hand just right.

Exact same experience. Put pachmyers on mine. Sweetest shooting 357 I have ever handled. Puts the factory SW's to shame. And built like a tank. Will never be sold.

Barrels are not easy to come by. Did you check the EE? Fellow that I bought it from had two.

I’ve only been casually looking for 4.2”+ revolver barrels (any make) for a few years (4?) but I’ve only seen two in all that time. Mind you, I only really check the EE and go to the odd local gun show once or twice a year? With better contacts I may have faired better.

Actually you just gave me a great idea. I know a fellow that lives and breathes guns and has tons of prohibs. He’ll buy entire collections to just get one or two guns that he wants and then sell the rest. If anyone knows where to find one he will.

No problem. There are a few things about these revolvers that set them apart. One thing that is cool is that they can be taken down with only a dime. It's only needed for the grip screw, other than that no tools are required to fully field strip it. They are a solid design, I read an article a while back that claimed that a range rental gun in the states had shot a million rounds with out failing (.38's I assume). They are heavy enough that shooting H110 fireballs is comfortable too. So comfortable I wish I could have a 4" to spice it up, but alas I was born too late for that party. I wish my dad had a collection like Ganderite. Lol

OP, I look forward to hearing how your rebarrel project goes. How do you plan to go about reworking the barrel to 4.2"? Simply cutting down and rethreading to fit the frame and forcing cone, leaving the front sight and barrel crown unmolested?

First I have to find a Security Six with an understanding owner as I don’t have 12.6.

I think it would be far easier to cut from the muzzle and have the front sight remounted. Cutting the forcing cone portion would mean rethreading not to mention the issue with losing a large chunk of the underlug.
The Security Six front sight sits in an elevated sight base due to the higher position of the adjustable rear sight. Cutting off the muzzle portion with this raised portion will make it easier for the gunsmith to get it to shoot point of aim.

They are great revolvers, fit well in the hand, tough smooth and solid. Well built, but not as good of a trigger as a Smith out of the box but easily tuned to be very good.

Mine is an '84 production blued/adjustable sights, formerly 4" purchased lightly used in '88 by my late father. I had to rebarrel it 17 years ago to keep it due to the 12.6 bs. My local shop sent it to a Ruger authorized smith in Alberta, who was able to source a new factory stainless barrel (blued was NLA) then black teflon coated the barrel to match the blued frame to the extent possible. Cost was $270 at that time all in, but would be higher now and a new factory barrel would likely not be available.

You won't regret buying and shooting it, although a 12.6 rebarrel these days adds more challenge to it, and likely isn't worthwhile purely from a money perspective, but is from a shooting and avoiding the 12.6 trap and possible destruction.
