Interesting thread, for sure. My Dad, born in 1900 on a bare a$$ Saskatchewan farm, and having gone through the Depression, was most definitely careful with his money. He owned an old Tobin double 12 and an M1917 BSA sporter. He wasn't what I would call a hunter, at least not when I was in the picture. He did, however, manage to instill in me a love for guns, hunting, and shooting that has taken me on a wild and wonderful ride.
My first "gun" was a lever BB gun. In my little world, I was a mighty hunter. Then, one day as we were heading out "chicken hunting", we stopped at the old hardware. He bought me a new Cooey Model 39. It has been clear sailing ever since! My first step into reloading was a good old Lee Loader in 30-30.
Much has transpired since the days of tramping the bush with my Cooey. If my Dad is watching me, he knows that I appreciate his subtle ways of guiding me into a world of outdoor enjoyment. I thank him often.
I don't consider myself a mighty hunter, nor even a good shot. Heaven knows I've fired off enough rounds to supply a good revolution, and have enough firearms to equip a good body of revolutionists! I like to hunt. Whether I actually bring anything home for the table is not all that important to me. I certainly don't try any fancy long shots, especially with the guns I carry!
Including my BB gun days, I guess I can say I've hunted for 60 years. I've been shooting for nearly that long. I've been reloading for nearly 50 years. I have never lost interest. In fact, I am more into guns than ever! No hope for me - at all!
