Musings and Obsevations of an Old Shooter/Hunter/Reloader..........

Interesting thread, for sure. My Dad, born in 1900 on a bare a$$ Saskatchewan farm, and having gone through the Depression, was most definitely careful with his money. He owned an old Tobin double 12 and an M1917 BSA sporter. He wasn't what I would call a hunter, at least not when I was in the picture. He did, however, manage to instill in me a love for guns, hunting, and shooting that has taken me on a wild and wonderful ride.

My first "gun" was a lever BB gun. In my little world, I was a mighty hunter. Then, one day as we were heading out "chicken hunting", we stopped at the old hardware. He bought me a new Cooey Model 39. It has been clear sailing ever since! My first step into reloading was a good old Lee Loader in 30-30.

Much has transpired since the days of tramping the bush with my Cooey. If my Dad is watching me, he knows that I appreciate his subtle ways of guiding me into a world of outdoor enjoyment. I thank him often.

I don't consider myself a mighty hunter, nor even a good shot. Heaven knows I've fired off enough rounds to supply a good revolution, and have enough firearms to equip a good body of revolutionists! I like to hunt. Whether I actually bring anything home for the table is not all that important to me. I certainly don't try any fancy long shots, especially with the guns I carry!

Including my BB gun days, I guess I can say I've hunted for 60 years. I've been shooting for nearly that long. I've been reloading for nearly 50 years. I have never lost interest. In fact, I am more into guns than ever! No hope for me - at all! :)

My youngest son indicated interest in a couple so he got. Marlin 45-70, and a Browning micro medallion in 22 Hornet. Glad I could pass them along. As for me I am quite happy to have 1 go to hunting rifle, even though I have many to pick from. Dad hunted for many years with 1 gun and did not reload, I wish I was the hunter and snap shot he was. My brother carried a 303 Savage for years and never found it lacking. He killed many moose and elk with it.

I compare it to driving. Not all drivers are car people. In fact, most aren't. You can tell that by the number of beige and silver Camry's and Accord's on the road.

Awesome thread! I'm one of those one gun hunters and a hunter before a shooter, that's how I was raised. Meat is meat ya can't eat the horns.

Got my 30-06 pump 11 years ago when I was 17 and killed deer, bear and moose with it. Lots of deer. No desire to ever use another rifle unless mine breaks or wears out it's that one lucky gun that's become a extension of myself. Peep sight out to 150 yards I don't question my ability to hit what I'm shooting at. Although shots rarely exceed 50 yards.

Hell called; they want to know what to do with all the "Under new management" signs.

Tell them not to burn them..........even Charlie Manson died, so there is still hope..........of course his activities were somewhat curtailed for the last 50 years, I have no such limitations.........

The reason them vultures are following you around has nothing to do with you personally, they just read about your exploits in Oz and figured you'd be a good bet to watch.

Well yeah, that's what I thought too. Hoyt has got me thinking though; maybe if I limp around and stumble a few times they might drop into range. I can be my own bait.

To get the birds really cloae you might want to sacrifice superfluous body parts... might I suggest.......

I dunno. Luring, tricking, decoying, lieing in wait for,
or even baiting are one thing. Well, they are several things. Semantics.

Poisoning seems like crosses the line somehow.

Ssshhhhhhh; they're starting to come down.

What about the one gun hunter...with a safe full of other guns? Dad has probably 30 long guns. From .22 hornet to .338 (last I looked!). Bolt action 12 guage to a marlin lever .44mag, to a 1700's front stuffer with a 2' bayonet. Never see him carrying anything other than the old .308 BLR with a 4x Leopold though.

You know how you tell a one gun shooter?

You don't, he'll tell you.;). Sometimes before and sometimes after he tells you he ain't much for dem der paper targets but is deadly on anything with hair or feathers . His gun is dead on 'cause he never bumped it since he shot at a rock 3 years ago.
