The REAL cost of buying a new handgun

Pretty much everyone I’ve been around in the shooting world are the same.
It easy to say “I’ll just buy one pistol and make it a 9mm so it’s cheaper”. Suddenly you’re sitting on one in every caliber with all the doodads that go with them. Ammo, cleaning supplies, cases, mats, locks, belts, slings, mags, safes, glass, sights, barrels, stocks, grips and the list goes on. And I still stop on my way home from work to “see if there’s anything I need”. Spent another $100 this afternoon and met a dude that has me convinced to start reloading (thanks Matt!!!!!), so basically the visit cost me dearly. Can’t wait to start making my own rounds. “Hmmm...maybe I should think about casting bullets.....”

That’s my point! I can try all the guns I want but if I were to buy one, I must have the proper holster, 3-4 mags, mag carriers and good sights. If not, I’ll always feel like I’m missing something and have that itch that must be scratched!

LOL... oddly, it's also my point... there is no reason that you have to think that, except you let yourself. I find a way to resist my undiagnosed OCD when I want to. ;)
 
I take a more practical approach, I guess. For me, the only accessory that's necessary are more magazines. That is a must for me. I used to buy sights and try to upgrade all my pistols to fiber optics, get trigger kits, and buy this and that and the other. Nowadays, I can't be bothered. The expense does add up. And if I have to sell it, I'd be selling the pistol at a significant loss. So, yes, I'm still buying pistols, but outside of magazines, I'm just leaving it stock. Holsters are pointless unless I'm competing, since the clubs I belong to can be worse than the trudeau government at times. So, I only have holsters for my CZ Shadow 2, Glock 17, and Tanfoglio Stock III.

Excellent response.

For me, must have accessories: holster setup, mags/speedloaders, dies, reloading components (the last two save money, right? Ha). The accessories I buy right away are the reloading stuff, holsters and mags/speedloaders are picked up over time if I like the platform and want to keep it. Expensive modifications should not be necessary, sights may be justified I guess.
Have the itch for new guns all the time though.

Well I would suggest a lot of folks shoot competitions where that option for the most part is not available. I thought the first person who asked what holsters are for was kidding but then i realized, after reading his first post on the forum, he is simply trying to run up his post count so he can get on the EE exchange.

I can tell you that 100% of the folks who shoot, IDPA, IPSC, Cowboy Action, & US Steel use holsters as do those who have carry permits for Wilderness carry.
