It’s time for a revolt in Ontario. Or you could just move to The Prairies where we don’t have quite as much government interference in our lives.

In the 2 municipalities where I farm no permits are required for any kind of building. That includes houses. There are no building inspections either, nor septic system inspections. The only 2 things a permit is required for is electrical and natural gas.

The municipality where I have my primary residence is another story altogether. Permits are required for any outbuilding bigger than 12x12’ and all septic systems.

To the op, if you are able to put the property in another family members name, that's one way out of your problem. Here in Ontario if you purchase a property with building or buildings on it they are yours to keep the bylaws will not effect you. We had to do this very thing, as the Township was brutal to try and build a camp with. So we quickly built, sold to another family member for 100 bucks, building is fine to keep now. There's ways to play their game right back at them. Seems to be a common thing in Ontario, people buying land building cabins and selling the property before the townships figure it out.

They'll eventually close the loophole on that too. Up until a few years ago, hunt camps and sheds that were built prior to a certian date were grandfathered in... they're now going back and revisiting those too...
 
The point is that we shouldn't have to 'find a way' but rather be able to live freely without fear of government and trying to out smart the system. We live in a democracy (apparently) and we- the people- should be able ot vote in or out the right people to make the changes we want to see. There's no reason for us to have to be creative and find work arounds, especially for the majority of things that are completely harmless and have no impact on society as a whole.

Absolutely. Lobby your local politicians. For there to be a hunt camp it should be rural? Then make the formal approach to the local and MLA direct and with support. (Other families that hunt / local hook and bullet club / hunting farmer (livestock / produce protection) etc. Canada is about community, and none should be overlooked?

Remember, local government is run by public servants, who unfortunately interpret legislation in their own way. Have other people, like their elected masters, help them with the correct interpretation of those regulations.

Guy at work bought a water access only camp couple years back and built some out buildings thinking he was safe. Last year he received some pictures taken from a drone and a letter. Don't remember what it cost him to get cleared up so I won't speculate, but remember saying holy #### at the time

A friend , who has a subscription, forwards me her Ontario Farmer papers. Farmers in Southern Ontario apparently live in fear of woods encroaching on their fields. Serious offense to clear them without a forester approving. :confused: Authorities are pushing for professionally managed wood lots. Not quite that bad here yet.

buildings can still be considered a "home" when vacant.

You are confusing a "home" with what constitutes my "primary residence" to the tax man

That’s insane. Where I farm it’s still legal to drain your land on to your neighbors land. That’s a crappy thing to do someone and most people don’t do it without first discussing it with everyone it’ll affect. My point is, cutting down trees on private land affects no one so why would it require permit?

If I were an Ontario farmer, I’d just let my glyphosate drift into those trees on the field edge every time I sprayed. Oops.
 
They built a structure for human occupancy where no structure is permitted and they don't want to pay taxes on it. What gives this family special rights over everyone else in the township? Typical O.L.A. hyperbole.
 
I used to live near a member of the exec of the local Ontario Landowners Association chapter. This guy had the signs all over his property and was constantly railing against every rule he could find. He was always telling everyone how we should all be able to do/build absolutely anything we wanted on our land and that government should have zero say in it. That we should view our properties as "individual nations unto themselves".

Well, I guess his next door neighbour followed that advice and signed a contact to lease part of his property to have a cell phone tower built on it. The OLA guy went absolutely BANANAS!!!! He was knocking on all our doors with a petition opposed to the tower and leaving flyers about how our babies would be born with 3 eyes. He hounded the municipal Council, the MP and MPP demanding that the government intervene to stop his neighbour's tower.

No matter how you tried to talk to thIS OLA guy, he was totally blind to his own hypocrisy.

2.Bottom line: These municipalities are dead broke (all of 'em, I bet) and they are looking to squeeze every last drop, out of us insolent, amusing peasants... (hmm. As a kid, I always thought he was saying "amusing" :/)

Latest little tid bit I picked up from Ontario Farmer. Antis are apparently placing lengths of buried re bar and other steel objects in farmers fields to puncture tires, to discourage land clearing. Screwed up is right.
