I have a Da 556 shipping out this week, need a Triangular Handguard Cap for it but don't know what the size of the barrel is for it, either .750 or .625.

if anyone could help it would be greatly appreciated!

Seriously, the pins can be VERY hard to remove.... During the process, I destroyed the pins and made some scratches on my FSB. I finally reparkerized my FSB an bought new pins. But in the end, these vintage handguards look so cool!

My pro-tip to you is to Dremel or grind down the "thin" side of each pin right to the FSB, so you don't peen the ends, and then begin cycles of heating and beating, using the hardest punch you can find. Around the time that you are cursing, sobbing and ready to give up, the pins will give up and come out. They are so hard, I was able to reuse mine... seriously, I think they're made of Adamantium. Hear me now & believe me later.

I am waiting to 'pull the trigger' on purchasing the DA556 to do this conversion. Would it not be easier just to drill out the pins or are they that hard?

Reading posts above regarding FSB pins. There is a trick to remove stuck pins I learned it in mechanics school. Preheat FSB pinned area with propane torch not too much though, just enough to expand FSB metal. Then knock pins out with sure blows to pin heads. This will make them moving. Apply heat as needed when pins start to move then dunk the FSB and barrel in to cold water bucket and dry it. Pins will come out easily and with no damage to any components.
Hope this helps to any of you struggling with FSB removal on these rifles.

The truth.
By the time I was using a hand sledge, blow torch with barrel braced and strapped to a modified 2x4 on the floor for maximum transfer of force I gave up.
I've removed pins on the work bench with two strikes prior to attempting these. They are in there fackin' for good!

Had to get mine cut off. For your ease of mind though, those DA556 barrels are exceptional barrels. I finally got mine on my M16A1 clone after I shot the old colt barrel out. Mine shoots 55gr FMJ like a damned lazer. The Chinese knew what they were doing with the Norc AR's. Especially the barrels.

You have never attempted to remove Norinco FSB Taper pins Sir.
They defy all traditional laws of physics and smithing techniques.

I removed a Jungle Carbine Flash Cone with less effort than the Norc Pins (that's a hell of a task). Some WILL come out with a bit of effort with methods above but some will never.

Heard the same stories for these mofo pins. The forums, my gunsmith, everyone had a horror story to share. I took mine straight to my engine builder, he has all the facilities and know how. Offered to drop off a ton of beer for his help, but assured me it took him only a few quick strikes and Shazam!! Also, my barrel is of .750 flavour, did they build in both sizes I guess?

If you look close enough you can see the marks on the front sight post from the shop press they squeezed the taper pins in with, they bottomed it out. Its doable but it is definetly a PITA. I got mine out. I had to buy new Taper pins after though.

I'm going to buy either a Macdef or ATRS NR receiver set soon. Would a norc be a suitable donor rifle, or are the threads different on the Chinese guns?

You might be talking about a different rifle than the rest of us.
Here is the 20" pencil barrel DA556 that works best for the retro conversion, in either 1:9 or 1:12 barrel:

This is the barrel if you need just the barrel...warning, it's not reamed for taper pins! https://www.canadaammo.com/product/detail/dominion-arms-da-556-20-barrel/

Lol have you said a prayer before you were doing your nork FSB job.? May be that would have helped? . :)

I can't speak for Travis, but I can tell you I did not offer up a prayer, and this resulted in much gnashing of teeth, rendering of hair and many curses and imprecations! Seriously, it is a beach of a job.

Maybe, I was working with the 14.5. It had the .750 barrel. Got 2pr of triangulated hand guards (20") .625. end cap, 3 prong flash hider, removable carry handle if someone is doing a retro
