So, I was knocking around the MBR forum (like I do almost every day) and I came across this thread; https://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php/1612953-So-this-just-happened-Game-over-man-gt-lt?p=14622664#post14622664

and had an urge to go back and re-read the whole darn thread.... and that’s when I read this post:

If the OP still has the bolt, can we see good lighting pics of the bottom of the bolt? I'm betting this is another of those MIM bolts that have been appearing and seem to be failing at an alarming rate around the 150-250 round mark.

And I believe I have that OPs bolt..... couldn’t tell ya which one it is, but I figured it was time to do this.

In the last 6 months, I have had several customers call/email about bolt replacement due to bolt lugs being sheared off. 7 rifles to be exact, 3 of which sent along the broken bolt and allowed me to keep them. Some fellas want their broken stuff back, which I completely understand and have no issues with.

All of these rifles were post 2014 imports. I DO NOT know who imported them. Some had the year of manuf for the first 4 digits of the serial # some serial #s started with a P or a N before the 5 or 6 digit serial #.

The questionable bolts are fairly easy to spot, they are black in color (not grey) and have 10 circles evenly spaced upon the underside of the bolt (5 per side).

The long and the short of it fellas, is if you’re going to buy a new rifle (or a used one) and you can’t visually inspect it before purchase, and the retailer or seller won’t examine or send pics of the underside of the bolt, DONT BUY THE RIFLE! Unless you feel comfortable with the idea of shelling out additional funds for a bolt

Now as per the quoted section above, I’ll attach a couple pics of the broken bolts I have here.

Does this include the latest 7.62X39 models from YOU KNOW WHO?

I don't know, but a MIM bolt may be OK in a 7.62x39 (45,010 psi SAAMI). It's a much lower pressure round than 7.62x51 (60,191 psi SAAMI).

That said, if they are MIM bolts, I would personally look to replace such a bolt with an older or military bolt that was forged and machined. Those don;t have a failure history like these new MIM products do.

I DO NOT know who imported them.

We know in the case of the thread you cited that the rifle was imported by North Sylva. Wolverine retailed the rifle, and when it failed, NS refused to do anything about it, citing the end user must have done something wrong. Wolverine stepped up and gave the shooter a USGI bolt to install.

So at least some of these unsafe bolts can be laid at the cost-cutting feet of North Sylva. They either OK'd the production change, or are accepting of it and continue to retail the rifles. Either way, it does NOT look good on NS.

Not mine.. I've got a grey bolt. Same as the barrel and receiver.
I got mine from SFRC

Don't rely on the colour. Look for the MIM circles on the underside of the bolt to know for sure. A MIM bolt can be zinc parkerized grey like the rest of the rifle. The above bolts are either black-oxide finished or manganese-phosphate parkerized.

That is what was stated in that thread, but due to the differance in serial #’s it is reasonable to assume that this issue is not due to a single batch from one importer....

What 10 circles? Please point them out.

I can't believe these companies to continue to retail rifles with these bolts in them - and to not issue a recall of every rifle they sold with them.

Any of you out there reading this with good forged spare bolts please offer them up for sale to help out a fellow member. We don't need anyone getting hurt over this.

That will just encourage bad behavior. I think affected owners should RETURN THE RIFLES. Elsewise, the importer will just not fix the issue.

I agree

Happened to me

NS took my rifle back, they want to have you pay for shipping though...

Its been out for warranty repair for 2 weeks now, I guess they have a lot warranty work to do, being a chinese importer and all...

NS couldn't even be bothered to respond to my message to them let alone do anything to rectify the issue at hand
A very generous gcn member sold me a forged bolt for mine so NS can go you know where, really piss poor customer service on their part, should have bought the rifle from marstar
