It was a mild afternoon, so I got out to the fifty yard range.
Trail Boss powder, Tractor Red powder coat and check from Blaser's check maker. Used Home Hardware flashing at about .013".
Nine shots with just the foreend rested on a plastic gun case.
Winchester 1885 with Leupold 8x.
Yup, works for me.

That would work for me too - nice grouping. How many grains of TrailBoss? Weight of bullet? At present I'm using 13.0 g. of 5744 with Lyman 375248, 249 g. bullet. A mild load and good accuracy at 50 yds. but I like to keep alternative loads in mind.

Well done....please tell me more about the Blaser's check maker? Cdn I hope. I've been looking but only found them stateside for now.

I'm glad to see someone's 38/55 is working for them....
Mine requires a fat bullet but then I can't chamber it.....grrr
please don't respond this is a common problem with old winchesters....I already know

I had the same problem with using .382 bullets that my Winchester was calling for. I bought some starline brass that is really thin and it works perfectly. Some of my Winchester brass needed a slight polishing on the last inch of brass to get them to chamber with the fat bullet. I bought an expander die from Track of the wolf https://www.trackofthewolf.com/Categories/PartDetail.aspx/226/1/LEE-DIE-45-EX and had my friend make a .381 neck expander plug for it. Now I just seat the bullet almost by hand and a nice roll crimp to keep the bullet it. Feeds in the magazine like butter and shoots great for a 105 year old rifle. I use iron sights at 100 yards (1.5" group) and for the 200 yard target I have a tang slight that I use and I average about 3.5-4" groups.

There's a couple of things suggested here that I haven't tried yet....Thank you Mister hunter64...and my apologies to the OP for derailing the thread.
Cheers

My bullets drop from the mould at .3785-.379. Add a couple of thou for the powder coating and I size them back to .379.

Bassmaster:
I only use the long Starline brass (2.125) and it's supposed to be thinner in the neck area as previously reported.
PM me if you'd like a few to try.
