Rifle of whatever sort become secondary to all the gear you need on a hunt?

Make no mistake, I love acquiring hunting rifles and optics to go with as the situation demands. But I must be touching a cornerstone in my hunting life, for whatever reason - rangefinders and rifles with magnification of silly levels have lost my interest temporally. Proper wool gear, and some truly fine hunting moccasins have my attention. Been yapping about a flintlock for far too long... if I don't make a bivy off the side of my quad this year, may be time to hand in the Old Boy's Club Card... Cant believe I said quad and not bushwhack for 12 miles!!

Well - Some of us have gotten into "period" hunting. That is, using gear representative of a certain time period. For me, the time is the early 1900's, so leather boots, wool clothing, trap door underwear, Ross rifle, compass, etc. I do make a concession of using a radio as we hunt in groups, and I am one of the doggers. If the fad catches on at the camp, I'm sure the radios will go too.

Ahhhh goll dang magnifeyeing glass.
One year I was trying to make me species tag legal with the kritter laying on the ground.
I was in udder distress and them wee werds and numbers and chit I was suppose remove
were butt ne'er a blurr.
Now I gartzs me ol`man glazziss to really fruck me up.

After being wet and cold for years i decidedto buy quality hunting gear. Its been worth it. I can hunt longer and harder and further

This.

Fancy optics and range finders allow me to make better bow shots as well. I enjoy being comfortable with light packable gear.

I only really learned recently to end the chase for the perfect rifle and actually buy decent gear that will drag me out more and for longer periods. Debating the merits of 308 vs 3006 from your couch in November pales in comparison to being afield regardless of what firearm you're carrying.

My choice of good boots is more important than what rifle I carry.

Hardcore.

I agree with the boots 100% as you get older different things become more important. Boots are very important now. I found that now in my last few years of hunting I finally have all the decent equipment that I require.
