3 Gun AR15 - questions and opinions

I would be the last person in the world to try and persuade someone from buying another AR but maybe just get out to a match and start shooting with your X95? You may discover what your preferences truly are or that your preferences may change over time.

Yes, thats the plan for now. I actually like the X95 and as a beginner I imagine it'll be capable of more than I am (really 3 gun will be just for fun initially - I don't expect to be competitive) but I'm always looking to the future

Have looked at the specs of a LOT of potential rifles recently and every one has strengths and weaknesses (many of which are personal preference) which has got me thinking about building an AR from the ground up instead

In some ways it makes more sense than buying a complete gun and replacing the parts I don't like after the fact. Like I've said before, when I find something I like I tend to hang onto it for a while so I don't mind if this takes a little time.

I`m semi familiar with the inner workings of ARs so off the top of my head I`d need:

Lower
Upper receiver
Trigger group
BCG
Charging handle
Butt stock
Pistol grip
Handguard
Barrel
Muzzle brake

Anything I'm missing? (*goes off to price components for dream build*)

It depends what you mean
- Lower Receiver - stripped or complete - if stripped you need lower parts kit - safety, take down pins, mag release, possibly a trigger guard
- Upper Receiver - stripped or complete - if stripped you need forward assist and ejection port cover, pin, spring
- the barrel needs a gas block and gas tube
- receiver extension (buffer tube), buffer and buffer spring

You also need some specific tools. I have a couple of ARs which were bought as complete units. I started building one with an Areo Precision upper and lower receiver set. As the build progressed I found I had more questions than answers, lacked tools, and couldn't get many of the components I wanted in Canada. I have now started my budget build and I am basically looking for the most inexpensive parts I can find and using this build for learning and experimenting.

Daniel Defense DDM4V7 has a 16" barrel. I have been using a DDM4V5 for six or seven years and love it. Still stock except for the pistol grip. I have been alternating between a red dot and Vortex PST 1-4x for optics depending on the match. Upgraded to a 1-8x Strike Eagle for this year.

Most matches I attend the vast majority of targets are under 75m so I don't see the need for match barrels. The few targets that are at 300m or beyond are usually not too difficult and I only shoot 55gr FMJ so I am not maximizing the accuracy potential of the rifle.

The more I look for a rifle the more I like the DD 16”. It certainly seems to fill the compromise spot between the short and the longer rifles. As I see it you have decent barrel length, long hand guard, maintains a fair amount FPS and energy. It can enter the US, still small enough for CQB and it shaves more than a pound off the 18” pro with the govt profile barrel. Drop in a better trigger of your choice and a compensator to your liking and you should have a decent all around rifle.

The only limitation of a 16" barrel is you can't really do rifle length gas....if that matters to you.

Personally, I went 18" with rifle length gas system with an adjustable gas block and lightweight bolt. It is very soft shooting and almost no recoil

Is anyone running carbon wrapped barrels on AR15s? Searches suggest they are out there.

Seems they are 1/3 lighter than regular barrels and more accurate to boot.

With this being the component that makes the gun most front heavy I think it would make the handling much nicer

Don't forget that your ammo plays a big part in the accuracy department just like the barrel.

Why not look for a Sig Sauer M400 Predator. They can be found for around $1500.00 and it comes with an 18" bbl and rifle length gas system, Geissele trigger, and 15" hand guard. I went that route and could not be happier. I did end up swapping over to some go fast parts like a Faxon lightweight bolt and an adjustable gas block last year. Like Onagoth said, hardly any recoil once you get it tuned up.

I saw one in Canada. Roughly speaking, you'd have to budget about $1500 to get one.

Yeah, I could believe it - been reading up on them and they are as good as the hype it seems but I do wonder if they'll get cheaper as they become more mainstream

As it stands I can go 3 different ways:

1) Build my ultimate AR - specced exactly as I want (expensive for sure)

2) Buy a pre built AR (definitely cheaper but I wonder if it will slowly turn into an even more expensive version of option 1)

3) Use my Tavor until I'm sure what I want to do

The much discussed draconian gun laws that appear to be on the horizon could also present some new challenges (particularly for ARs) but right now its all speculation.

Hmmm, I had a look and could only find Canadian M400 Predators for $2K+

Was yours new or used?

It seems direct impingement is what everybody in 3 Gun uses - is that because its lighter than the piston offerings and/or does the piston system negate the recoil reducing advantage of a full length gas system?

Build your own, you will likely replace 80% of what is on the gun anyway
I built my 3 gun rifle, cost me about 2500$, but it's 2500$ of everything that I love.

That would be the best option by far but with the spec I'm thinking of the cost could get crazy

I bought mine new a couple years ago so I'm sure the price has gone up from the $1500.00 that they were selling for back then. Even at 2K, the price is not out to lunch. An adjustable gas block and a JP Silent Capture Spring is all you would need to get it (tuned up). Ammo will play a big part on how the gun runs and feels, but for the distances that I play at, 55 grain FMJ's work quite well.

So all this talk of AR bans has got me thinking - *if* this does happen what will be the gun of choice for 3 Gun?

The Macabee SLR?

Thats what I was thinking

I only found out about them tonight - don't know how it escaped my attention before

I would be leaning towards a full on build for sure if this does become the only viable option thanks to our Liberal dictatorship

Timely topic.
I was also looking into few options and like you really like the DD4V7 PRO or DD4V11 PRO ,they are ready to go and seem to balance well and just feel outstanding however,, i am contemplating finding a DD4V7 SLW , it shaves off 1.5 pounds and then add a Geissele 3G trigger. This will cost a little more in the end and your stuck with a welded flash suppressor, but that weight !!!

I been reading up on the 16" DD4V7 SLW and there are 2 versions offered the lightest one having a skinny barrel - makes me wonder if it'll lose accuracy when it heats up like the X95?
