Charges laid in Navan pig shooting

What gets me is they trespassed onto private property and shot a pet. I don't care if you like pigs as pets or not. I hope they get the book thrown at them for such a wanton disregard for the law.

So today was the day the two shooters were supposed to be in court. I can't find any news on any outcome.

Anybody closer to the situation/area hear any information?

Both men pleaded guilty to charges under Ontario's Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act. Laplante, who pulled the trigger, pleaded guilty to careless use of a firearm. He received a $1,500 fine, lost his hunting licence and will be required to take a hunting safety course.

Yurkowski, who was with Laplante but didn't fire a shot, was fined $500 and lost his licence for eight months. He must also take the hunting safety course.

Each man received a suspended sentence for a second count of trespassing.

There should be fines for stupidity..

This was kicked around in another thread. The shooter was NOT a hunter and he thought he was taking out some wild boar. The swine were running around in an open field and frankly I don't think that anyone who saw them would have been thinking "Oh those are pet Vietnamese Pot Bellied Pigs." It does seem the shooter did trespass but there can be good reasons for doing that and I would think that the motive of removing a serious agricultural pest that has been spreading across the whole continent is a pretty good one. Buddy even phoned the landowners to notify them, he clearly had no other motive than sparing the county a boar invasion. Unless this turns out to be a cause celebre with PETA and ALF demonstrating outside the courthouse or the magistrate is an anti, he will not face a significant penalty.

Not sure people know or can even imagine what it's like to live outside a city anymore but pet pigs running around loose are not reasonably to be encountered.

I hope you're being facetious. Just because you don't like someone's pet doesn't mean they should not be allowed to own them. They didn't keep them in a 26th floor of a bachelor apartment, but had a large pen for them. This guy was an adze hole, and according to one person I talked to (I have no idea if it's true or not) he knew exactly what he was doing.

To be totally honest, one could be the start of an invasion, but this was not a case of mistaken identity.

I seem to recall from reading the original article that the fella had asked permission to hunt there earlier on and was denied. So he returns when they are not home, trespasses, and "accidentally" shoots their pigs...yeah that sounds likely.
Papaclaude hit the nail square on the head with that last comment imo.

Two pigs is hardly a wild boar invasion and a threat to the entire county.

from a few sources
Wild hogs will breed year round, but births peak in spring and fall. Gestation is 114 days, and a sow will give birth to anywhere from 1 to a dozen piglets. She can have 2 litters a year.

that's up to 24 new piglets for the first 24 months.. work out what the rate is for 5 years.. yes that why the MNR is worried and posted the notices..

What a bunch of horse####. They absolutely were hunters. They tresspassed and shot two pets. Read some quotes here. He went into their pen, shot them point blank, hid them, the lied to the owners.

"Laplante had called to ask for permission to hunt on her Frank Kenny Road property."

"Nooyen rushed home to find the pig pen empty and Laplante and another man near his house. He asked the men what had happened to the pigs, and was told they'd run off.

He searched for nearly an hour, but couldn't find them, Guilbeault said."

"I basically shot them point blank," he admitted. "I thought I was doing a good thing. It never once crossed my mind that I was shooting somebody's pets. It's the biggest regret that I'm going to have to live with for the rest of my life."

"He said after shooting the pigs, he noticed the pen and realized what he'd done. He said he regrets lying to Nooyen, and wishes Guilbeault could find a way to forgive him."

"The couple called Ottawa police, and officers went to retrieve the animals' carcasses from Laplante. The pigs are now buried under a tree on the couple's property."

If that is the case the pair should make full restitution to the couple and offer to replace or pay for the loss of the pets all the other legal penalties not with standing

Just read that the people got a couple more pigs as pets. They slaughtered and ate one as it wasn't working out. Interesting epilogue.

Potbellied pigs are actually very clean and quite smart... my father raised them on his farm for a few years. Many of the buyers sent pictures of their potbellied pigs integrated into the family just like a dog or cat would be.

In addition to the criminal charges they should be court ordered to make restitution.

Charges weren't criminal. They were provincial offences.

What I can't understand is how gun owners are paranoid about policing throwing them in jail for simple offences like forgetting a license or deviating from the strightest possible route with restricteds, but then two guys can break into a rural property and slaughter two animals with firearms, after having been refused entry by the land owners, and the police won't even attend the scene. If thats not careless/reckless use of a firearm... or using a firearm in the commission of an offence...

Yes, asked in person, was denied in person, then weeks later called again to get permission, but call was not answered, and basically left a voicemail saying that he was going to trespass anyways cause he was tracking animals. Owner got the message eventually, and raced home to find his pigs missing, and the land owner had already loaded up the pigs and lied about what they were, leaving the land owner to frantically search for his pigs for more than hour.

That guy deserves a lifetime ban from hunting if you ask me. It was a mistake. It wasn't careless. It was just a blatant disregard of property rights, target discrimination, and good old fashioned hunting ethics.
