Both men pleaded guilty to charges under Ontario's Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act. Laplante, who pulled the trigger, pleaded guilty to careless use of a firearm. He received a $1,500 fine, lost his hunting licence and will be required to take a hunting safety course.
Yurkowski, who was with Laplante but didn't fire a shot, was fined $500 and lost his licence for eight months. He must also take the hunting safety course.
Each man received a suspended sentence for a second count of trespassing.

I seem to recall from reading the original article that the fella had asked permission to hunt there earlier on and was denied. So he returns when they are not home, trespasses, and "accidentally" shoots their pigs...yeah that sounds likely.
Papaclaude hit the nail square on the head with that last comment imo.

What a bunch of horse####. They absolutely were hunters. They tresspassed and shot two pets. Read some quotes here. He went into their pen, shot them point blank, hid them, the lied to the owners.

If that is the case the pair should make full restitution to the couple and offer to replace or pay for the loss of the pets all the other legal penalties not with standing

Charges weren't criminal. They were provincial offences.
What I can't understand is how gun owners are paranoid about policing throwing them in jail for simple offences like forgetting a license or deviating from the strightest possible route with restricteds, but then two guys can break into a rural property and slaughter two animals with firearms, after having been refused entry by the land owners, and the police won't even attend the scene. If thats not careless/reckless use of a firearm... or using a firearm in the commission of an offence...
Yes, asked in person, was denied in person, then weeks later called again to get permission, but call was not answered, and basically left a voicemail saying that he was going to trespass anyways cause he was tracking animals. Owner got the message eventually, and raced home to find his pigs missing, and the land owner had already loaded up the pigs and lied about what they were, leaving the land owner to frantically search for his pigs for more than hour.
That guy deserves a lifetime ban from hunting if you ask me. It was a mistake. It wasn't careless. It was just a blatant disregard of property rights, target discrimination, and good old fashioned hunting ethics.
