Say a person had a nice S&W 617/Ruger Blackhawk (revolver in General) and wanted a very nice target round what do you think is best?

If a person had a 1911 22 or a M&P 22 or any other semi auto what do you think might work best in that?

I have shot a few different brands in my 22's and I Really like Mini Mags and Remington Vipers in my Revolvers. But my Colt 1911 I have yet to
play around with which would make it most accurate, the Colt will eat anything, it's like a revolver that way, it just keeps spitting them out but I want
different sights for it and want it to be a better target gun than just plinking.
 
Lapua, Eely, RWS, are really good ammo brands.
There are Some great choices under the names SK, and CCI such as Green Tag, or CCI Standard.
Federal Gold Medal Match is also nice stuff. The quality on many of these is top notch, but not everyone wants to pay the $75. to $260. per brick that this stuff can command.

You don't really get to pick if ammo really is good, your gun does.
All guns like one ammo over another. It's part of the fun to find out what it likes.
I try to get some of each type that I can afford, and do some accuracy testing from a rest or sandbags.
We just pay attention looking for group sizes, how dirty it is, split cases, and changes in velocity.
We also look for any function problems such as Failure to fire, Failure to feed, Failure to eject,

When some folks find an ammo their gun really likes, they will buy as much as they can afford from that particular lot.

Lately I have been trying to get rid of my Winchester T-22 Grey box.
There are to many duds and inconsistent powder charges, even a split case.
Winchester white box is also quite poopy.
I used to have issues with Remington Thunderbolts, lately I never hear anything good about Remington Golden Bullets.

So how much do you want to shell out for good ammo.
CCI Mini Mags are around $12.00/100 at CT.
CCI Standard Velocity Target are quite decent for the price of $10.99/100 at CT
Federal Automatch is app $30.00 per 325 box
Hirsch or Nordic can probably get you Some SK Plus for $75.00 per brick.

Many guns get along with CCI Blaser, American Eagle, and Federal Champion, but not all.

To close I will recommend that you not pay $53.00 for a bulk pack of Remington or Winchester.
For the same price CCI & Federal will serve you better. It probably looks like I'm a fanboy, if so they have earned it.
I would love to buy some high end Lapua & Eely, It just costs too much for me and I don't compete.

I stick to CCI 40g mini mags, they function in every .22 handgun I've ever tried, I have no doubt if I were a Bullseye shooter I would experiment more for accuracy, but for Speed Steel and training CCI are all I use
 
Eley, Lapua, RWS, SK for premium ammo
Aguila, CCI, Federal in that order for cheaper ammo. Aguila straddles the two price ranges.
Remington and Winchester are no go for me. One exception I have some old Remington match grade ammo that is really good, but once it runs out.....
 
Stick with copper plated stuff in your 1911 .22 , I can't see any rifling if I shoot a box of 50 of plain lead in mine.

Shooting copper plated bullets cleans up the rifling so that's not a big deal unless you need accuracy.
 
Used to swear by eley ammo, but have recently started using SK, and it groups better for me than the eley (and it's cheaper).

Mini mags always work, they don't group perfectly, but nothing better to make a 10/22 run well.

Blazer is the stuff I use if I just want to crank through a lot of rounds. I don't recall having too much trouble with duds with blazer.



Whenever I'm in a "most strikes on the rim of a cartridge without ignition" contest, (and am serious about winning), I buy some remington .22
 
Buy a box (not a brick) of everything you can find and see what you gun likes. For a semi this is critical, because they have preferences.

Bulk pack is often ammo the factory found to be sub-spec. CCI Mini Mag has been uniformly good for me.

Some of my semi's will eat Rem Golden Bullet, but otherwise I'd have to agree. The best?? Well, like many others have said CCI really shines. I was amazed at the performance of the Winchester Wildcat I got on sale. A couple jams but for 6 cents a pop they seem to work pretty well in everything I've used them in. (note, I'm plinking and not performance target shooting so my comments are really about does it go bang .. )
 
My M&P 22 loves the Blazer 40g lead, CCI Mini Mags 40g copper, CCI 36g Hollow Point copper and American Eagle High Velocity Solid 40g.

Has some issues with Federal Auto Match FTF and a couple MF. The nose on the Auto Match is rather blunt which may be the issue with feeding but that was with a new pistol.

Depends entirely on the individual gun. Ammo testing is the only way to determine what is “best”, and even then can differ between production lots.

A 1911-22 or M&P 22 aren’t precision guns so I wouldn’t worry about it too much. Find something cheap and reliable (Mini-mag, American Eagle, SK Magazine if you want to splurge) and you’ll have yourself a good time.

In this type of contest, I choose Winchester:)
 
Personally I love Eley for accuracy. Being a revolver, the lower pressure is not a concern. Colour on the box only loosely correlates to accuracy in my opinion until you get into the RED or better.

Green Orange Yellow really matters more what gun you are using it in.

For general I don't care if I hit what I am shooting at, I use Federal, just cause I bought 20k rounds of it 4 years ago and haven't ran through it yet.

I have a SW 617 with Eley it can ring an 8" gong at 50m all day long.
