Winchester 94, is it worth it?

Wanting to add a lever gun to my collection, is the Winchester 94 (at $1900 at Cabela's) really worth like almost twice much as a Marlin? The Marlins come in pistol calibres which seem like cheaper ammo. What do you all have, are you pleased with your Marlin or Winchester?
 
I would look for a used one in great shape. $1900 seems like a lot to me.
I would check the ee, the used sections of site sponsors, and local "Mr Barter" buy and sell publications that are gun friendly.
 
There are a lot of good 94's out there for sale.
Just go to a gun show, and work out a deal with the vendor.
I know that some are overpriced but I know there are deals to be found.

You're looking at the fancy new model? Octagon to round barrel, checkering, crescent buttplate, etc.? That's why the price is high. Want a perfectly good '94, different models? Lots available on the used market.
 
I like the Winchester 94, but prefer the Marlin 336.

The Winchester is lighter, but the Marlin is easier to scope & I prefer a scope with my eyes & low light.

I also like the 35Rem cartridge the Marlin is available in.

The price you quoted for the Winchester 94 seems WAY high?

IMHO you should be able to get either of them on the EE for anywhere between $350 and $800 depending on condition etc...

had you of not mentioned Cabelas I would of Said to Stop looking in the Australian Classifieds and switch the AUD button off LOL

that's what we pay for shiit down here..... new ones for plenty and second hand ones for SFA at times, if private sale good priced if shop 2nd hand... ripped off.

If your buying a rifle with a 30-30 or comparable length cartridge then either the Marlin or Winchester will work wonderfully but if your buying a pistol caliber length cartridge gun then the "controlled round feed" of the Marlin has proven to be a better choice. A # of different feeding anomalies are encountered with the short cartridge Winchesters ( double feeds, expulsion of live rounds out the top, stovepipe jams etc.).
 
I dunno about problems with Winchester 94’s and short cartridges. Could be fact, could be internet legend. I dunno.
What I do know for FACT is that I had a junk Winchester 94 30/30 that had a bent barrel. I converted it to 44/40 with a cheap barrel and internals from Numrich, now Gun Parts Corp. I load it hot, using data from an old Lyman manual from the days before lawsuits . I shoot it like a 22; THOUSANDS of rounds through it. Killed lots of game with it. I can’t make it stop working. I would chase dangerous game with it no problem.
 
Buy yourself an excellent condition Pre-64 Model 94 in .30/30 for $700... excellent rifle, cheap shooting.

Nice guns, but not $1000+ nice guns, over the Pre-64 in excellent condition... and somehow, they lack the soul of the original... I own both and only get the "feels" (as the kids say... apparently), with the Pre-64.
 
I have a pre-64 94 in 32 Special, one of my "don't sell til I'm dead" guns. It belonged to my dad, so it has sentimental value to me also. Aside from that, it's one of only three North American built firearms that we own, and the other two are pistols. Nice working, solidly built rifle. I'd suggest looking for a used 94 or an older Marlin, both are good quality rifles.
There are a lot of guns I'd buy before I spent $1659.99 on a new Winchester, Miroku made or not.
