M14 Vortex flash hider question - which one?

So here's a question. I have a 22" criterion barrel that I'm thinking of cutting to 18.5" and threading for a flash suppressor. I was thinking a vortex would be a good choice, but looking at the offerings, I think all the .308" M14-compatible vortexes are meant to direct-connect to a 22" USGI barrel's castle nut threads, or alternately, to a 18" Crazy Horse barrel, which also has USGI splines and castle nut threads.

So if I shorten a regular M14 barrel, I'm assuming I can't use the Direct Connect vortex FS?

So does anyone know, does the Direct Connect FS make use of the flash suppressor splines at the muzzle, or does it just use the threads?

Is there a non-direct connect Vortex FS that can be put on an M14 barrel that is just threaded at the muzzle without splines?

Hmm...

OK, well I have a 18.5" chicom barrel on the receiver now that isn't in bad shape. I'd have preferred to go to a new US-made barrel, but if I want the vortex/CH system, I may have to buy the M305 versions of the gas lock sight and FS.

Not the end of the world, I tend to collect parts and will use them all eventually.

If you shorten your barrel have the muzzle threaded for 5/8×24 then buy a 7.62 Vortex with that pitch

I went with the M305 version of the vortex. Only the receiver and bbl will be Norinco when done, should be a nice build - one of several I have underway right now.

I don't think you can put 5/8 threads on a 14mm barrel.1/2x28 tpi is typically what you end up with when you cut and thread a Barrel.this is what is available when you're working with splines to get you up to 5/8[

This is true. I totally forgot. What many guys do is thread it for 1/2×28 and bore out a 5.56 flash suppressor

Pretty sure the vortex flash hiders are hardened and nitrided.

You could bore one out with a cobalt drill, but it would make the suppressor much less durable and susceptible to gas cutting.

Forgot I had this in the back of the safe Barrel was cut threaded 1/2 28 and Vortex was also 1/2 28 also not modified don't remember where I got it. It must be available Somewhere Out There.
