Turkey guns

M-6?

All that camo, and a big black gun...

I have a picture of my and my hunting buddy from last year on our first ever turkey hunt, From less than 20 yards, with him leaned up against a tree in camo. Its impressive how effective modern camo can be, but the picture made it painfully obvious how visible our factory black synthetic stocks and firearms were.

I am sure many a turkey has been killed by a non camo gun, but the perfectionist in me couldn't sleep or hunt again until the gun was fixed...

What's impressive is how effective marketing is to convince some hunters they need the latest head to toe camo or they'll be like a flashing beacon in the bush. The turkey doesn't care about a black gun, why should the hunter?

For the past several years I've been using a Remington 870 compact 20g that has a Bushnell Legend Ultra HD 1.75-5x32 DOA 200 mounted on it. Barrel is a 21" with a Tight Wad turkey choke. Winchester 3" Double X turkey loads in #5, 1200 fps has been the shell of choice in the past, however, this year I'll be using the 3" Winchester Elite Long Beard XR in #5 at 1000 fps.

As I said in my post, the perfectionist in me couldn't abide something that stuck out. I readily admitted that it had nothing to do with needing effective camo in order to shoot turkey, just a preference. We all have them.

OCD? I have that....as much as I love my turkey gun, the mix match of camo patterns drive me nuts. The barrel and stock were purchased separately and unfortunately turkey barrels werent available in Max4 camo and Choate only sold stocks in black synthetic so I did a DIY hydro dip in the closest camo pattern available. Not ideal, but manageable I guess

My dedicated turkey gun is a mossberg 535 ats in an ati m4 adjustible stock and anti jam black forend with a custom .650 wilson precision choke. It wears a 4x32 redfeild scope. Its heavy long and black but it works great. I just enjoy hunting with a variety of guns. I love camo but dont own a camo gun
Personaly turkey hunting is all marketing to me. But what else can i hunt and spend money on in the spring? Plus they taste great

A nice GLOSSY Browning Citori would probably drive you around the bend too then...

Haha....well if it makes you feel better, of all the turkeys that came close to mine, they didnt complain either. But its possible I just didnt give them enough time to come up with a complaint

I just love to buy camo stuff !!.....
I know a guy who hunts very successfully in calf sh*t brown one piece grease stained coveralls.
I will say this , camo does assist in keeping you somewhat blended in and sometimes will help when making inadvertent movement.

I shoot 3 1/2 Inch Beretta Extrema, yes,,, in camo.

12 gauge Browning Silver NWTF 24" barrel, Vortex Razor reflex sight, 3" Longbeard XR #6 with Longbeard XR choke.

10 Gauge Browning Gold 24" barrel, fiber optic sights, Win Double X #5, 3 1/2". Browning Turkey choke.

If that was my ONLY gun, I think I would have had a stroke trying to reconcile throwing $9 dollars worth of Canadian Tire spray paint on such a beautiful looking gun, but then I don't think I would ever have the stones to take such a good looking gun into the bush in the first place.

But then If i could afford a Citori, I would just get the Cynergy camo

Turkey Guns

My choice because I am in a wheelchair is a Sinsinati 20 gage with 2 bbls 14" for popup chair blind and a 28" for the field shooting.Theres a lot less kick so it's easier on me.

Mossberg 500 with tight wad choke and winchester xx #4s. Beard buster hi viz sights on the vent rib. Sighted in just slightly high at 25 yrds. Nice pattern not insanely tight as to miss at 15 lol

Except that the Cynergy fit is nothing like the Citori... I have tried half a dozen Cynergy's, including a camo 12 gauge, and I end up selling them all. That is why my last few camo guns have been limited edition camo Citori's the lastest is pictured above.

I honestly don't even like handling the high end over unders in the store, cause I know I can't afford one and don't need one.... This is where you tell me that the Citori's aren't even 'high end'...

They are only high end compared to a CZ or Stoeger... you can pick up a good used one for under $1500... that ain't high end... but for that money you are getting a quality field gun, that will stand you in good stead... of course even Mossbergs go "bang!"
