I recently purchased an NP-29 for IPSC, and had some questions about modifications I can make that will improve the pistol, and be cost effective. I'm not worried about being moved into another class due to the mods, just looking to do some cheap modifications to improve my performance...I don't really care how I do against others at this point.

I'm sure someone will chime in with it wasn't the best choice for action shooting, and I'd agree, but I'll go out on a limb and say for money spent on the gun, accessories, and part availability nothing else is even close. I'm blown away by the quality of this gun for what I spent on it. The finish is pretty good, I was expecting to have to take the sharp edges off, but it appears to be unnecessary. It shot 115gr S&B FMJ just a hair left of point of aim, and more than accurate enough for my purpose/skill. I think this rates really high on my best buy list regardless of where it got made.

Who out there is shooting a 1911 in IPSC, and what would you suggest for my first improvements. My only complaint at the moment is the magwell is a bit hard to hit cleanly. It's the only place I've taken my stone to just to round the edges a wee bit. Also any recommendations on 9mm magazines that will be better suited to dropping on hard surfaces, and an inexpensive adjustable sight set. Finally what is the best place on this side of the border for parts. I know Brownell's is unbeatable, but I have my reasons for dealing with Canadian operations.

I used one of those for ipsc. It worked great. I used a Maxwell and grip tape. Also paid for a trigger job. The fun was reliable and accurate. I did file the frame edges where the magazine goes in cause the magweel I had was wider and my mags would catch on the frame.

The trigger on these is pretty good out of the box. Mine is a chrome finish and i have heard they are a bit nicer than the blued. It does need some smoothing out of the rails and decent mags. Also, a VERY complete cleaning and oiling out of the box. Mine has over 1k rounds now and no problems. For the money its a great plinker but if you are going to ipsec/idpa i would do a few upgrades like:
1. Extended magwell
2. Match grade barrel bushing
3. Match adjustable trigger
4. Decent set of springs
5. Good mags
5. Adjustable sights (not sure if they are available without milling)

I have done NON of these upgrades but except deburring the rails/slide and polishing the sear a bit. Fed it Blazer, Fed, Barnaul....eats it all.

For those of us who know better... guys like this keep the price down for us!!!

Never thought of it that way! I know about the potential problems, but I've never had one with the few I've owned (had 5 Savage Rifles over the years, and never had one without a problem, only one major). I just received a stripped Norinco Upper, and it's much better than the CQA I had from about 10 years ago. Assembling may be a problem but it's quite nice cosmetically. My NP-29 has been great so far!

What sights did you use Ganderite?

The rear dovetail is standard Colt 1911 size. Any Colt sight will fit. I sometimes use the LPA adjustable.

The front is either standard M70 Colt small tenon or a odd-ball Norinco small dovetail. I have used Colt small tenon sights or have bought dovetail front sights and had gunsmith mill a suitable dovetail.

That front looks like it's about the same height as my stock front sight. That rear looks like what I'm looking for, any source this side of the border, or is Brownells the place to get it from?
