is .40 dead?

I have three .40 cal, two Gen 4 G22 and one M&P 40. Love the round! Can get ammo for about 400$ per 1k rounds, so not cheap, but defo cheaper than .45 and a lot cheaper than 10mm auto. Is a good IPSC round for sure.

I mostly shoot 9mm (due to cost, less recoil, etc), but I find that .40 is my go to when I want a snappier round. Find 9mm +P harder to find lately.

I had a lot of .40 brass, picked up dies and a NP58; I rather like the .40; so much fun to shoot, and I'm getting pretty good with it too. I am loading 200 gr. copper plated truncated cone bullets, "Calibers" brand, made locally.
 
Yep, when I turned 40 I thought, well your almost dead, but, not true, it was awesome! Some would say real handgun calibers start at .40!!! I like them all! They all have a place. 9 mm are light for carry and you can fit more in a mag. Whereas the larger calibers are usually heavier hitting so you may not need as many rounds in a LE/military. Situation. In Canada we can only have 10 round mags, so why not have the heavy hitter! I really like the .45 acp round and the feel of a 1911 grip!
 
Personally, I like the .40 S&W. :cool:

Not by much.

Factory ammo is much cheaper. But reloading is almost the same price.

Same primer. Same powder. 3 cents more for a bullet.
 
Lets see I shoot 9mm, 38spl, 40 and 45acp. The 40 is my least favorite round when shooting commercial ammo through plastic frame firearms. But currently I am the most accurate with my CZ TS shooting my hand load 40's. Is it dead, no. Do I see a particular reason for it, no. Any real advantages to it, no. Is there anything wrong with it, no.

Number 1 is the answer to Number 3. Yes, there is an advantage. Accuracy is a real and quantifiable advantage. It could win you a trophy or ________. Besides, IMO, only accurate guns are interesting.

My handloads are very accurate in my Ruger P91 and FNS40L, as well.

5-shot groups of 2 inches at 15 meters are possible with my P91, off hand, on a good day.

FNS40L can do 3 inch groups under the same conditions.

The 40's accuracy and power are its two endearing qualities, IMO, particularly in the light of our 10 round mag limit.

Another reason (of lesser importance) I like or even love the .40 is that guys are unloading them in almost brand new condition, and I picked up my 40s for ridiculously cheap.

A valid point.

In places with no capacity limits; People like 9mm because you get more capacity for any given size of magazine.

We have no such advantage in Canada.
