A buddy of mine is looking very specifically for a 14.5" Colt Defence M4A1 SOCOM.... which would be a Colt 6921, if my understanding of Colt models is correct. I've seen one or two Colt ARs marked M4A1, with the RIS/RAS/whatever-they-are rails, but I'm not sure if they were 6920s or 6921s. Anyone know for sure? And anyone have a lead on one? Or should I just tell him to buy an "M4 CARBINE" marked 16" 6920, buy an aftermarket rail package, and be done with it??

I'm more of a Colt Canada guy, so I'm not really a Colt USA expert. Thanks in advance :)

Colt 6921. With a kac m4 quad rail. Comp m4 on qrp2 mount with a killflash... tada. M4a1.

There are a few M4A1 marked lowers out there. I got one. Best too look in the US. There are some small places that have them for rock bottom prices for the whole gun if you want to import through Irunguns. The deals I had seen 5 years ago in the US were amazing for what you were getting.

Look at this moron what he paid for his Colt. Man Americans have no idea how great they have it at times. Lol

M4A1 lowers that came with either the 6921 or 6920 are on the rare side. They should have the heavy barrel, and either a Troy or Knights drop in rail. They are pretty sought after in the US for clone builders, and the few that are in Canada sometimes come up on EE as either complete stock carbines or M4A1 or CQBR clones built to spec by hobbiests. I do not think Colt is currently stamping anymore of these.

Thanks all! Sounds like M4 CARBINE rollmarks on a 6921, and adding the rail of his choice, will be the way to go. Or a 6920 if he can't find the 6921 :)

You can get the parts through Brownells they usually have 14.5 Socom barrels for sale.

The 16" barrel is just fine unless you are going for an accurrate clone/ re-creation of a military M4. I have had huge luck with 16" 6920 barrels being very accurate, always doing better than spec with decent ammo.

Colt has a bad habit of recycle parts after a military contract is done. They could of had a bunch of unmilled receiver that already had M4A1 marked on them. The M4A1 lowers are few and far between. Most shops in the US sold the lower off separately.

That's the one I'm looking for. They were made for the Italian Colt distributor, some of the over runs are in the US, but going for stupid money. I had a line on one and the guy originally wanted $300US for a stripped lower, then changed his mind and wanted a $1000US.

Hilo, in your opinion are the 16" Colt barrels better shooters than their 14.5" barrels?

Best I've seen is 6920 lower I believe with property of us government roll mark. Semi auto. Was on one of large ar15 forum few yrs ago

Nah. They are even. Nothing special but fairly consistant. This is one area colt canada handily rocks their american rivals. You can get decent groups with good ammo 16 or 14.5. Probably around 3-4 moa with bulk stuff like m193 or m855

I think at worst they are equal to a 14.5
More likely they are slightly superior due to the increased velocity. Material wise they are identical to military issued barrels, but the 1.5 inches does matter. its just physics....
I have owned/ shot about half a dozen colt 14.5 uppers. Maybe 3-4 16 inch 6920's. The 16 in barrels performed better.

Thanks for the answers, I appreciate it!

R34skyline, that makes sense...especially since Colt Canada uses the cold hammer forging process where the bore and chamber are one piece. Always gonna be better than having a bore, then cutting a chamber into it eh?

Hilo71, thank you too! I was thinking if anything, being 1.5" shorter would mean the barrel was slightly (although probably not enough to matter) more rigid, so likely not worse all things being equal.

3-4" is about what I was expecting from the bulk stuff...But a bit better ammo would be nice! I hear the SOCOM profile really shoots, not looking for *that* good, but a bit better than 3" would be appreciated.

I’ve not shot a 14.5, but have shot a Colt 20” pencil barel, colt 20” HBAR and a Colt 20” government profile, the HBAR being the most accurate. My 16” 6920 is pretty close to matching it, using Federal M855.

My 20" Colt (AR15A4) is nothing to write home about at all with green tip, but I was blaming the ammo more so than anything.

Still, that much shorter should mean quite a bit more rigidity.

Given a choice between a 6920 and an Diemaco/ colt canada anything, I would pick the CC any day.
