Winchester 101 steel ammo?

Personally I haven't and never will put steel through any of my 101's for fear of a ring bulge OR splitting the barrel webb. Imo the barrels are too thin, lead or the rich man's ammo (tungsten or bismuth) but I'm not rich so I'll just use other guns for steel. Still use the lead out of them for woodcock as the law still let's me and I'm not over water, wish I could do the same for doves.

I made the unfortunate mistake of firing steel through a pigeon grade 12ga 101 when steel first came out, i really had no clue what it would do, before i realized not too, I already had a noticeable bulge in one barrel. I was so mad at myself.....never fired a single round of steel since. well almost none , a few big 3 1/2 inch cigars out of a Benelli pump. Steel is good for alot of things, but being flung out the business end of a fine firearm is not one of them. I don't and will not shoot anything with it.

been around a long time, owned many 101's of varying ga's, I can assure you I've never in my life seen any 101 selling for 300$. even a beat up field grade will fetch 500+. any old model in good to very good condition is worth 800 or better. Pigeon grades much more. I've seen 410's in very good condition get 2000$ US. My dad bought me my first shotgun in 1975 ,I was 12 years old, it was a 101 20ga, i'm pretty sure he paid the better part of 1000$ back then, he traded in his dads WW2 bring back luger for it plus . he had no idea about pistols and didn't want it in the house. thankfully i still have that 20 ga.. If you see one advertised for 300$ somewhere please PM me, i'll buy it sight unseen.

Maybe in your area they sold for more in the past ,but in mine ,until recent years, if it was just a plain jane 12 gauge that was about the most you could hope to get.Now a 28 gauge or .410 is a different matter as I have stated. Those guns always commanded a higher price. Also a higher grade gun would of course go for a bit more.you are not likely going to see a Model 101 go for $300.00 today ,as I have stated the prices on the Model 101 have been on the rise of late years for all grades of Model 101 shotguns.

Can remember back to a time when a brand new 28 gauge Model 101 could be bought for $369.95 for the field gun and $379.95 for the skeet gun.Now mind you, that is going back a long time.Still have old price lists that show them listed for those prices.

the good ole days i guess, can you imagine buying all you could and putting them away. woulda been better investment than any crappy canada bonds. now you will not find any 101 under 800$ unless its been used as a plant stake or a fire poker.
