Not many ranges are certified for prohibited rifles, lots of people are slow to realize this. The CFO isn't going to hand out the authorization either
Actually, I have never seen a club approval that specifically did not allow prohibited rifles. Only automatic fire is prohibited.
The problem is the CFO will NOT issue an ATT for prohibited firearms, except handguns, for the purpose of target shooting.
We have put on show and tells with everything from Lewis water cooled through Brens and MG34s to MP5s and Steyr Augs. We had no problem arranging the ATT's but only for display, no firing.
We had one table set up with an AR15(T) long barrel, a Swiss Arms Classic Green and an HK93 and ran a competition among some members that were LEOs, Conservation officers, PAL instructors and even a couple of local politicians on which was the NR, which was Restricted and which was prohib.
Very few go it right. Not surprising really considering they were all semi automatic, same caliber, same detachable mag, same mag capacity. Why would there be a difference?
They were really surprised and asked us why there was a difference. When forced to choose, most thought the Swiss Arms was the prohib because of the folding stock, the restricted was the HK93 and the non restricted was the AR because of the long barrel.
When the military wanted to use our range I remember sitting down with Chris Wyatt and explaining to him as the military does not need an ATT there is no reason that they cannot use our range with their issued weapons based on our approval.
He agreed and they arrived with C7s and C8s but the first command from the RO was to ensure the selector was on single shot. If one weapon had gone full auto then the club was closed down.
