A Remington 783 in 7mm Rem Mag.

I'm startin' to think one of the 783's in 7mm. would make for a nice "beater .458 Win." build.;)
Oh oh, there goes the wheels turnin' agin'.:runaway:

Ted, if your rifle don't suit ye, I'd be happy to buy it when yer done with 'er after the season.:)

No worries on stocks and bottom metal for Remington 783's. Boyds have 'em and Pacific Tool & Guage make the trigger guard/mag.well assy. Me thinks my next .458 will be built on one of these puppies.:)

Just so you know, I tried feeding a magazine full, three rounds, of Winchester factory FMC in the rifle, and it feeds up and into the chamber mouth like it was made for that cartridge.

Would not chamber, of course, but went in far enough that have no doubt it would do so if the barrel was so chambered.

Ted, Ya gotta do up a 783 in .458 as it's a natural, big bore project. I was gonna do up one when a nice deal on a M70 Winchester .458 appeared and I grabbed 'er up with zero regrets.

That said, I'm still onboard for 783 builds in this fun & flexible chambering. The 783 is a great platform for tinkerin' with.:)

Just got back from the range. Yes, we are still shooting up here at 11:00PM this time of year.

Here's three shots with someone else's loads: 154 gr Hornady SST, 65 gr H4831, and magnum primer.

Mag full went into 1 3/16 inch at 100 yards. Not too bad with an old Leupold set at lowest 3.5 power. I mounted the Weaver K6 on a 270, and put the 3.5-10 on the 783 a while back.

Hmm, don't know why the pictures is rotated. It should be 90 degrees to clockwise. Anyway, the 783 journey continues. ;)

I picked up a 783 in 7mm Remington mag last fall for 350.00 at a local gun store.
Installed a Bushnell 3500 3-9x40 DOA 600 scope, no ejection issues!
Loaded up some 140 TTSX'S with a maximum load of H4831sc straight from the Barnes website. No load development, took it to the range and shot a .75 inch 5 shot group at 100yds.
Was going to be a backup gun on a hunting trip but decided to change that up one morning and took it out. Shot a mule buck with it an hour into the hunt. Next morning I shot a whitetail buck with it and then later that afternoon it took a black bear.
Later that fall I decided to take it out on the last day of our 7 day bull moose season. A few hours into that morning I shot a nice bull with it.
It's the luckiest gun I own! :d

I think Jerry (Mystic Precision) can have 783 barrels in 458 win mag.
Thanks, yes i have gotten Brass from Jerry and am following what he is developing with the short receiver 783, he seems to like what Remington has done and is doing very well in competitions! I am sure he would agree that it is a good platform for experimentation!

I was about about to buy one for my son in .243,,,,,No way I will go near them now after what I read. Sounds like junk.

These rifles are far from junk. They were designed by rifle folk to get accurate & dependable performance from a modern made, stiff receiver and medium contour barrel combined with a decent, user adjustable trigger that can get down to below 2 lb. with a bit of tinkering. The plastic stocked ones can be tweeked to shoot rather well at long range with minimal expense and the walnut stocked ones are sweet. Good aftermarket support is gaining for the 783 quickly because folks are discovering the benefits of the design. Lots of options.

Too good to pass up as either a hunting arm or the basis for long range competition rifle. The 783 is a sleeper action ready to go to town. I need to get some titanium to do up firing pins & such.:runaway:

Not sure what you are reading, but I have read only good/great reviews! Fantastic hunting rifle as is and is a a great starting point for a build! It can outshoot some 700 models!

anyone that thinks the 783 is junk has not owned one it will outshoot twice the price rifles... mine shoots 1/2 moa 5 shot groups .. paid 300 for it new whats not to like .. mine also had a firing pin problem ... called gravel agency ... new firing pin and spring in mail 5 days very good service

For me the one of the most important things on a rifle is that it has an excellent track record of functioning 100%. Issues of models not ejecting properly right away gives me concerns. This isnt the first time Ive heard of these having ejection issues.

You must not have read the whole thread, the problem was the scope, not the rifle! However, free will and choice is a great thing, there are many great rifles out there including this one, so enjoy the selection process, it's all good!

My 783 in 7mm rem mag has proven to be a great shooter for the price i paid. I got it to get into 7mm and just see how the 783 performed and i have no real issues with it. Handloads produce sub moa 3 shot groups out to 200 yards(haven't gone further yet) and i was impressed with some factory offerings as well. I really dislike the bolt knob, thats my main gripe with it.

What factory loads did you find grouped best? Of the few I have tried so far, the Federal power shock 170 gr grouped very well!

Just received my new McGowen match barrel in 6.5 Creedmoor. This will end up doing dual duty as a hunting and PRS type set up. Scope is the Sightron STAC 3-16 LRMOA.

Love this chamber.. cause it is so easy to tune.

IMG_1989.jpg

Took the rifle out this morning and shot the groups circled. Each letter has a step difference of 0.2gr... B was the load that shot well in my other McGowen match prefit barrel. This barrel showed a desire to go higher in load amount.

The non circled groups were shot this afternoon.

I focused on load "D" and increasing the load 0.1 and 0.2gr... all shot at 200yds with pretty calm winds.. light and gusty but nothing too severe.

Except for 6 sighters and 2 foulers, all the shots run down the barrel so far are on this 1 target. I cleaned the barrel very well before shooting to get rid of the rust preventative and oils. I cleaned again after the first 19rds with no signs of copper.

I typically use Hrn 140gr BTHP cause it shoots quite well and uses similar load to my Bergers. Less money and makes for a great practise bullet. Unfortunately, you can see how there is some dispersion in the group but it matches the 1/2 MOA accuracy Hrn "shoots" for.

IMG_1990.jpg

Made up some ammo using D and D + 0.1gr with the Berger 140gr VLD... At 200yds, I am very happy with how it shot.... and with a Harris too. And in case you care, the 2X3rds were shot back to back without stopping.

For those who remember this rifle, I am using a 2nd action but it bolts perfectly into the bedding of the other barreled action (that barrel is fluted). That is how well these receivers are made. I would likely not be able to do this with a Rem 700 of recent production.

Some will dismiss the 783 because of its very low purchase price. They would be missing out on the sleeper action of the decade.

And, the extraction and ejection of both my receivers, and the other 5 I have personally shot, has worked just fine.

Jerry
