I put a shockwave grip on my 14" TacOrd 870. Ran it in 3 variations with some slugs and here is what I have so far. Bear in mind the gun has Vang Comp porting, so not a factory 870 barrel and recoil is different.

1) Bare Shockwave grip: Shoots well, feels like it might slip out of my hand though when handling and loading, a little slippery when shooting and my hand moved around a bit between shots.

2) "Camo" self adhesive tape you get at Cabelas: Good grip, same recoil feeling as the bare grip, no hand slippage.

3) Lizard Skins baseball bat grip tape (same as the bicycle stuff I run on my road bike): Nice and grippy, no slippage, and somewhat more comfortable to shoot the slugs, especially after a few slugs. My pick for the win, but we'll see how it holds up with time.

My preference is the Lizard Skins:

How do you find the 14” Barrel with the VCS overall with different loads? Thinking of sending mine to Casey for this option.

I haven't shot a 14" without it. With a Magpul stock it is milder than my Fabarm 11" Pistola with a Magpul. I have a TacOrd 870 with a 18.5" barrel and the VC as well, Magpul stock there too. The 14" isn't much different than the longer version. Both of my 870's came from Casey with the same full build spec.

I don't find accuracy that much different with loads, but I love the sights and the recoil difference with 3" slugs. I can actually shoot more slugs in one range day with this than my 460 S&W magnum or my dads 500. The Shockwave work well for hand position, and isn't as terrible as a standard vertical style pistol grip, which is too short on this gun anyway.

The shockwave is nice for our over all length requirements but the speedfeed is a better design as it supports the rear hand better and makes it easier to push forward with the front hand and pull back with the rear. This push-pull force adds a lot of stability and absorbs the recoil through both arms and shoulders.

You should try and build up a bit of a swell in the stock where your rear hand can rest while maintaining a comfortable trigger reach. Hockey tape would work well and then you can wrap your snake skin over top once you have the shape dialed for your hand.

Thanks for the info!

I'm much rather have a more vertically oriented pistol grip when actually shooting, but bird's head style grips like the Shockwave are handier to carry and storage IMO.

I thought the same thing until I put more rounds to the test with it. To be honest, it isn't a volume gun anyway. Backpacker slug gun for wilderness defense against Chipmunks. ;)

I will look around and see if I ever see that Speedfeed version, but I'm not unhappy enough to go out of my way for another grip. The Shockwave would be cool on my Pistola too, but too short unfortunately.

The speedfeed will likely be a hair short for your overall length requirement, so the raptor is a win! Based on how I like to shoot bird's head grips ( Push forward with the front hand-pull backwards with the rear) I found the raptor's extra length meant that I was not able to have my trigger hand were I wanted for trigger pull and get support form the part of the stock that get's fatter ( the birds head)
For sure they need extra traction as you determined but if the stock was a bit fatter behind where your natural grip is that becomes another thing to brace the hand against when you pull towards the rear and allows a slightly more relaxed grip.

I used a scrap piece of dense foam cut to shape and some hockey tape to build up a palm swell.... not supper pretty but feels good!

I just took another look at your picture and it looks like the overlaps of the grip tape you used shifted the palm swell a little bit but it also ended up creating small ridges almost like finger grooves.

I haven't shot mine in a while but I think it's time to put a little more effort into the custom shape and then wrap it with a similar grip tape.

If I remove this tape I might try to build the grip up a bit. It's a "one shot" type of tape so it would get pricey changing it more often. I do not find it slips much at all though, and maybe the palm swell isn't needed with a good foam tape? Also, I didn't realize the SpeedFeed was that much shorter? That isn't what I'm after! ;)

Yeah it is really grippy, but some work to the shape of the Shockwave might even be better. Maybe I'll buy another Shockwave and experiment.
