Remington 870, are the newer ones as bad?

I heard all the hype about Remington 870's being junk myself, but took a chance and bought one myself. I am very glad i did, because this thing rocks!

I had to Tweek nothing and it works 100% out of the gate. I did add a few parts, but only because i wanted too, not because I needed too.

I started with a 870 Police Magnum, 12g 3" and a 18" barrel, Scatter Gun Ghost ring sights, and a +2 mag extension. I bought i stock from Remington this way. I ended up installing a Flashlight clamp with a TLR-1 light just forward of the forend, and a 6 shot card with velcro on the side.

I actually picked up a 26" vent rib barrel from the EE for a very good price, and now doubles as my Duck gun. I just spend the 25 min and take all the tactical crap off it, put the vent rib barrel on it, with original mag cap and 2 shot plug.

Awesome - congrats! My recent production 870P guns have been stellar.

had a friend who had similar experience with 870. he replaced it with a bps ... much better made pump. I have a 870 Express from the early 90's ... it is still going strong. never had an issue with it. when i compare it with new ones...well if i were buying a pump these days the BPS would definitely be my choice.

You can still get lucky and find the 870 that works and is not rusting in the box. It may require bit of attention to make it fully serviceable though. If you just want a Christmas tree to hang all the tacticool toys on it... it's a perfect choice. If you however want a hard working shotgun that will continue to cycle out of the box and won't rust...you may be better off with something else.

For those rusting issues, just heat up some Johnson Paste Wax so it's liquified, then work it into the porous surface of that bead blasted finish. It'll repel moisture and rain. Or you can spray paint or Duracoat/Cerakote it. Swap out the extractor and you're good to go.

Or open your purse and buy a real 870 a wingmaster
Cheers

None of that will fix the extraction issues, but yes, you sure can do that.

If one pays a grand for a shotgun, one should expect near perfection. Just like with the new Ithacas. Not exactly the case those days with Remington. Some of the Wingmasters are also having extraction problems. It would be fair to partially blame the owners too, but only partially.

I’ve yet to see/read that anywhere. My personal experience has been the opposite.

I've worked at the gun counter of one of the biggest Canadian retailers for 18 months. I've sure seen my share of QC issues with Remington...and you know what? I like their products. I'm sure that you will have no problem finding first hand relations from the owners of their products too. Anyway, once you will get exposure to a wider variety of products from modern Remington, it would be fairly easy to find the common pattern there. BTW what you can see behind the gun counter in most of the stores is what passed the so called initial inspection, done by the personnel in that store already. On some of the Remington lines of products (including Marlin) the return rate was very high and that's again did not include what was already returned after the initial inspection. 870 was my first shotgun. I still want to like, but with the newer Remington firearms it's a hit or miss.

Pre-Freedom Group (Ha ha) Remington 870 Wingmaster AP manufactured in Nov 1955. Picked it up from the original owner who bought it new and shot around 10 rounds through it and back into the safe it went.

What is a grand today nothing
Stop being cheap I say to owners and buy some quality shells what doesn't have the odd issue with the crap hulls they feed them now
I have many of both like 23 or 25 in 870 and 10 or so ithaca with two second generation and one make is just as reliable as the other
Then again mine never see anything but aa, sts or gold metal designed hulls and my experience is not gun counter since 1974

Cheers
