Type 81 Bayonet modification thread

May I suggest an alternative way of mounting a bayonet on T81. Instead of reworking the bayonet itself, knock out the pin from the grenade launcher and move it 1/4 inch forward. You ll have to drill a new pin hole in the barrel, but that's it. While the grenade launcher attachment is off, you can drill some holes in the groves of the front part- (a la Yugo SKS 56 grenade launcher) effectively turning it into a muzzle break. :)
 
The rifle has already been modified for the Canadian market, that's why you can't fit a bayonet to it without another modification. Besides, it's a lot less work and the change is virtually unnoticeable.

It's not "modified", it's a newly constructed variant of an existing design. Though I agree with you that modding the rifle is a more practical option, as a collector, I wouldn't pay the same for a rifle that has had a new pin hole drilled in the barrel as I would for one that was unmolested.

Collectors in general are a finicky crowd.
 
If it was a Mauser, or even a Mosin Nagant or an SVT 40, I would agree with you. I don't know if a contemporary Chinese rifle qualifies for a collector status. Look at what CGNers are doing to their BCL 102s - almost all the parts get replaced with their US equivalents.
 
BCL 102 has zero collector value, does anyone collect stock NEA/BCL guns?

At least for some chinese guns there are collectors, the SKS-D for one.

The Bayonet is 30$ and takes a couple of hours to do a nice MOD. Why would anyone want an ugly bayo extension that cost more than the bayo ?

To quote your own words after a couple hours work "it's not that nice". That result was after your first go with it and you have extensive woodworking experience.

I was just providing another option that is completely reversible for those with no wood working experience or with no inclination for spending hours just to create a headache for themselves. Putting aside for a moment the exorbitant cost of the extension, the benefits of the lug extension are: 1- it's reversible, 2- the bayo will rest on the barrel where it was intended. 3- after the photo is taken to impress those on this site the lug extension can then be sold to help in hobby overhead recovery which should put profits right up there and in line with most hobbies
 
I fit an AR-15 bayonet on, a little tight where it locks in and real loose on the ring side. Its a Ukranian (I think, maybe Czech) one from Corwin arms

Sure, modify a limited offer $1,000 dollar rifle to fit a $30 bayo, I don't see anyone having regrets there
