I was watching the Detroit new's tonight. Apparently a father killed a bear at his campsite by throwing a log at it and hitting it in the head and killing it. Anyone have a ballistic table for logs?

Hemlock is better than alder, however a 6"x2" Hemlock is not as good as a alder 12" x3"

Then there is maple...

Hardwoods are generally better than softwoods:p

Ok I have to call BS on that :D Anybody worth their salt knows that the best load out is softwood followed by hardwood.

The softwood is thrown at the bears face where it easily splinters and blinds the bear. Blind and disorientated the bear is easy pickings for the hardwood kill throw. ;)

First you must find the angle of the dangle and then the pitch of the ditch. Then you must measure the diameter of the log and multiply by 2pie-r and that by the length. Then a float test in water should give some idea of the density (or you could just weigh it too). Me, Im going with the axe handle especially if it has a 5lb axehead firmly attached to it. Then again a 12ga pump is a lot easier to pack with your gear and a 12ga slug is good medecine for a bad bear. And now we have Grizzlies moving into Squamish....

a good piece of spruce may work on them little black bears (assuming it was a black bear) but for polar bears i prefer a 10 lb sledge hammer or at least a good length of rear

Really depends on the log for the trajectory. Most 5lb maple logs will have about 8 feet of drop over 10 yards. But if you go with a new WSM (white southern maple) you could expect to throw lasers with only 4 feet of drop over 10 yards. Only problem is that with the lighter maple you aren't really getting the stopping power of the birch. Where you really get the bear medicine is with SAUM (southern alberta ultra maple) that still has 8 feet of drop but with a 10lb log. I suppose you could use a RUM (rather ugly maple) but it's prone to breaking up when you load it hot. Better used for varmints when you get fragmenting like that.

Anybody tried the new W.M. (weatherby maple)? Hear it kicks pretty hard but not so bad if you get the log ported....

Even better

I just heard last weekend that there was something even better found. Some campers were attacked in the woods and they got 2 Bears, not 1 , at the same time by using Black Iron wood. Problem was it took all 3 campers to throw it and none of them could decide on what the proper load was !!
