"Weatherby sucks"

Sometimes the grapes are declared sour, without sampling such.
Price is relative. Styling is subjective. That there are a hand-full of Weatherby cartridges that you can grab a factory rifle with factory cartridges and aim at the middle of a big animal out to 400 and pull the trigger is fact. That he did it in the 40s is rather impressive. That he put Nosler Partitions in factory ammo moments after Nosler learned how to make them was ground breaking. That he had the guts to offer an accuracy guarantee decades before most of our members were born is note-worthy.
Mentioning these things in an ad seemed to ruffle a lot of feathers though.

I've been impressed by my Vanguard 2. Given the $520 price I paid for it at the time, it beat any of the axis/american's out there. Way better fit and finish, much smoother action, and it grouped >1" @ 100m out of the box. What's not to like? Tad on the heavy side, but that just helps tame the .300WinMag recoil. No complaints, much praise.

I don't think Howa/Vanguards are in the same league as the entry level selections out there. They are fully on par with Tikka and Browning from a quality, fit and finish perspective (minus their stocks). I am glad this thread came up, as I just pulled out my Howa for range day tomorrow. It wears a new B&C stock and I am hoping that it still holds at MOA (or better).

Not long ago, I was 'tempted' by a couple of Vanguards put up for sale by a couple of site members. One a 270 Win, the other in 300WM. 
I call them my 'flame throwers' by virtue of the stocks they have. They compare well, accuracy wise, with other rifles I've purchased in that price bracket. What has impressed me is the trigger pulls on them!! Fairly light weight wise but with a surprising crisp let off.

I have a "Flame Thrower" Vanguard as well in 308 and it has been a great rifle. You know with one of those it is going to get some attention! When we were rifle checked by the Wildlife Officers last hunting season the young officer really got a kick out of it. In fact I think he liked the look much more than I do!

I'm doin' the same thing. Sell a few, grab a few & end up with the same number of guns that I started the downsize thing at. That's what makes us NUTZ.

Thanks bud, and I've received similar words from another friend that's also a shooting and hunting enthusiast. His words of wisdom were along the line of, "you're not a collector but you've spent your life accumulating a very decent selection of shooting and hunting firearms. Look at them, play with them and use them in the field and let your kids worry about them, when that day & time comes". Problem solved

I've had most of the Wby calibers in 300 and under in MkV's and some in Vanguards and I can't say that I've been dissapointed with any of them. The Vanguards do have lousy triggers but they can be made better, the MkV triggers are fine, at least the Jap and German ones are, I haven't had a US made MkV.
I have one Jap made MkV in 270 Wby that is a real delight to shoot, the velocity is about 100 fps faster than the books say it should be and it shoots 9/10's of an inch groups at 100 yards all day long if I do my part with mild recoil, more than adequate for an out of the box hunting rifle. The 26 inch number 2 contour barrels are not whippey like the 24 inch number 1 contour barrels are but they're quite a bit heavier too. The number 1 barrels are so light that they're too hot to touch in 3 shots!
The MkV action is also incredibly strong, if I'm going to have an over pressure cartridge or case failure, I want it to be in an MkV.

As I made mention of in post #48, the triggers in the two Vanguards I have, border on excellent. Just went and tried them to make sure. Definitely no complaints. I didn't buy the rifles new so the previous owners could've had them worked over.

When I deek outta this place to vistas yet to be explored, I sure hope they have grand scenery & game to enjoy alongwith nice rifles, pistols & shotguns to keep the spirit alive, but if they have no dogs....Fook 'em.

Our Daughter,
who is also my Alberta Mule Deer & Antelope guide, was recently out with our Granddaughters for a visit. I have a number of prohips that I thought might be a concern,'down the line', but my Son In Law is 12(6) so that aspect is covered as well .A comfort in the great beyond for me would be knowing there are Yellow Labs around. It'll be pretty easy to tell as they shed 24/7

Isn't that the truth! I've finally downsized my collection to 5 firearms (1 shotgun, 4 rifles) and 1 pellet rifle as I am going to be living overseas for 4-6 months of the year and need to trim the volume. My son will inherit what I have remaining and then it becomes his "problem", though I suspect he'll be thrilled.
If I can only resist further purchases I don't need I would be in good stead. EE is so damn tempting!

Mine came with a "Two-stage HACT trigger", and it's bloody excellent... perhaps a touch too light! lol
