Recently zeroed my rifle at 100m, it’s right on the money but there’s only one issue. The elevation adjustment, as far as I’ve read, should be about 6-8 clicks from the bottom for a 100m zero. Mine is around 24 clicks... the sights are working fine like this but I’m losing a lot of my top end adjustment I would think.

My only guesses are that there’s something going on with the height of the front sight post? Or maybe the aperture hole isn’t centred? It seems fairly close though.

Before I had even zeroed it I had planned to upgrade to a USGI rear sight, but now I’m wondering if I’ll have to order a front sight as well? Ideas?

Side note: noticed this when I was doing the initial correcting of my FRONT sight windage. The markings on the receiver for the REAR sight windage are marked off-centre. If I line the centre line of the rear sight with the centre mark on the receiver, it sits to the right. Had to find centre by counting 16 clicks from each side... Has anyone else come across this? I was scratching my head while drifting the front sight until I noticed this.

File the front sight post down a bit at a time until you get your 8-10 clicks up at 100 yards. The windage gradients are the same on the Garand. It looks like they are off kilter until you measure with a caliper from outside of the sight 'ears' and allow for the right side being thinner than the left side.

FWIW, I had two norcs shortened to 18.5 inches from the factory 22 inch.

And I had to lower the front sight with a file on both. Not hard to do, just get a good look at the angle on the front blade, and wrap the ears of the sight protector with several layers of PVC to protect the finish. Finish with cold blue. Take your time and hold the file level left and right.

Thanks for the input so far guys. I wonder if I should wait until I replace the rear sight with a GI before I do any filling? Or would the Norinco and GI sights be in the same ballpark as far as elevation zero at 100m.? (i.e. I don’t want to file it down to suit the Norinco rear sight and then find out it’s too low for the GI)

So counting 16 clicks from each side isn’t a fool-proof way of finding the windage centre then?

I wouldn't file the front sight. There's no need for it. If you adjust the rear sight zero properly using Hungry's procedure, you should be good to go. The front sight should be zeroed for windage with the rear sight centred though. What's the longest distance you plan to shoot with the iron sights anyway?

Yes they are properly adjusted, the only problem is that I’m having to go all the way up to 24 clicks at only 100m. My range is pretty well as far as I want to go out. But I don’t think I would even attempt anything over 400 with iron sights for the time being.

One of the reasons I filed mine down was that the rear aperture was well above the sight protectors (ears?) and I thought that was asking for trouble if if ever took the rifle into the wild, rather than a session at a gun club. 24 clicks from the bottom is a lot.
