I recently received a Norinco NP 28 which is like a 9mm 1911 with a double stack magazine.
I never saw one before, is there anything I should know about it?
Is it a copy of something else.
I am not a fan of double stack mags as I have a small hand and I like Hogue and Pachmayr grips.
Is there any grips available for them.
Thanks
Al

If you have a small hand, this pistol is not going to be comfortable. I have one and also some of the Para Ordnance double stack. The Paras feel slimmer.

I have a big hand and I installed slim grips (grips are standard Colt), but it still feels fat in my hand.

The trigger bow is unique. Other parts are Colt.

So far as I know the mags are also unique, although I have heard a rumour that some model of Bersa mag will fit.

I have a heavily modified one.

The pencil barrel sucks. Replaced it with two Wilson ramped barrels and had the frame cut for the ramp. I have two barrels and the pistol runs both 9mm and 40 cal but the mags are iffy with 40 cal.

It is a solid platform to build from but mags are hard to come by and the mag lips are not well tempered so they need constant tuning. I am thinking of trying to temper one of mine to see if it helps by quenching in oil. I lucked out and ended up sourcing 12 mags over a 3 year period and they all seem to suck.

The only thing that has not been changed out on mine is the slide lock.

For the trigger, a Caspian Trik Trigger works with some fitting.

If you want to use it as a good gunsmithing project they are fun.

My 2 cents.

As per Ganderite, it is a double stack that has a unique trigger bow and mags.
I also have read that Bersa mags will fit.
Other than the double stack frame, the rest is standard Norinco/1911 parts.
The one that I had was fine , like most Norincos.

I tried all 5 mags but it doesn't hold open on the last round.
I found that very strange.
I think if I get some Hogue grips it wouldn't move around as much.
I will try it out, and if I can't handle it I will go back to my CZ 85 and the 1911 frames.

Norc NP-28

Handled one once.... "she's too fat for me".....lol.... But then I much prefer the BHP or CZ 75/85 series over the Beretta grips, too.

Why would you buy one , if you don't like fat grips, the single stack one '29 is nice , for the money they cost, liked mine, barrel bushing is poor fit, other wise good.
Someone would maybe be interested in a double stack and swap for a single stack.
There is no point to them when you can put 9 or 10 rounds in a 29

FOr the thick grip issue, I paid a buddy to machine some step cuts in flat aluminium stock for the sides so they barely protrude from the frame and then covered them in grip tape after affixing them with screws. The NP28 double stack is now just slightly wider than my 1911 colt series 70 that wears wood colt grips.

Have you taken the slide off and reinstalled the pin back in it9 slide release take down) insert a mag and you will see if the follower is pushing up on the slide lock, if not, wrong mags?
You should be able to see what is going on, weak mag springs, but I can't see 5 that way , sticking lever?
I have never worked on a double stack 1911, but should be the same as a standard 1911 is it not?
The first double stack 1911 45 is a Canadian gun, before they went south many years ago.

I have one, I like it. I've been shooting it for several years now. I have modified Beretta 92 mags to work, I just need to come up a way to build up the follower so it will engage the slide lock. The modded Beretta 92 mags feed and function fine, just do not lock the slide open when empty

I've ehad one for years, although I never shoot it anymore. I have no real gunsmith skills, and I thought it would be fun to play around with it, so I smoothed out everything, made sights by hand and installed magpul grips which are pretty slim compared to the original giant rubbery grip thing.

Ended up doing a bake on finish as I didn't want to invest any real $ in it. The finish held up for awhile but eventually scratched. One day I'll probably just strip it back to bare metal as it looks pretty cool in the white anyway.

I got the gun included in a deal with some other guns.
I thought it was interesting, the mags are factory.
I will try the mag in the gun without the grips to check if the hold open works.

Jed,

Are you able to describe the mods needed to make the Barrett’s 92 mags function in the NP28?

Many thanks

sure. I read somewhere that it was possible, so figgered I'd give it a try(also read that Bersa Thunder mags will work, but they are not exactly common either)
I have a Beretta CX4, so I tried one of my mags for fitment, it fits in but will not lock in & the baseplate angle is a bit off.
step 1. ordered a Beretta 92 mag from Corwin Arms
step 2. lay the mags side by side and compare, take some measurements & scribe some lines.
first off, the locking notch for the 92 mag is too low on the mag(which is actually good because it it is not in the way. more on this later)
second the front of the 92 mag in front of and below the feed lips is too high, so with the mag fully inserted it will engage the slide stop, but not fully. now disassemble the 92 mag.
step 3. with my trusty 1980's vintage Black & Decker Dremel like tool, cutoff wheel installed, I cut a properly located locking notch
step 4. using same tool cut down the top front of the 92 mag to sorta match the Norinco profile(there is not enough material on the 92 mag to match the profile exactly due to the existing cutout)
step 5. change cutoff wheel for grind stone and smooth it all out
step 6. reassemble magazine, load up some dummy rounds and test
mine worked out fine, the beretta follower is cut out/molded different than the Norinco so it will not activate the slide lock. the modified 92 mag will still work in the CX4, BUT the new locking notch will try and lock the magazine before it is fully inserted, so you need to push the mag release to fully insert(that is a pain in the carcass)
I will try and post some pics later today

I've done a bunch of these, but for stock mags in stock pistols. Norinco's not holding open; particularly the .45s is a common problem, and it's not the mag; the slide catch is too short. I build them up by tig welding, then hand work them to the correct shape and clearance, then re-blue. Easy for me, having a .45 to test the slide catch. I do this for the cost of return shipping; however, without a reference firearm, I doubt it would turn out right. Maybe a local gunsmith could help you out.

Here are the pics. You can see that I didn't do the most precision cutting, probably should clean that up now that I have tested and proven it works.
If you compare the followers in the pic with the two mags standing together, you can see how the Beretta follower is formed with a lower cut out on the front corner(the red one) this why the slide stop will not engage with these modified mags

On pic 2 you can see(but not real well) where I cut the new locking notch closer to the top
