My HK USP had a catastrophic failure...

Can you call HK directly? If this is a once off maybe they would be more willing to help than the warranty centre. I had a warranty experience with Remington and they worked with the warranty centre to fix it.

I have a Walther PPQ 5" at NS right now. Same 2 year warranty as with HK. Parts to fix will be on my dime. Walther warranty in the US is lifetime!. Gun went full auto on me three times. after less than 500 rounds. I am not sure it has much to do with North Star. More to do with Walther and in this case HK.

Take Care

Bob

I've got in the ballpark of 14.5 thousand rounds through my HK P30L in 40. 250rds previous owner, ~10k factory rounds (Mostly UMC, some Federal Champion), rest are reloads. It's still going strong. That shouldn't have happened...

What a joke, I’d be contacting HK USA and posting on hkpro. That should not happen, let alone on a gun billed as one of the most durable handguns in the world. IMO hk should make it right, this is clearly a manufacturing defect.

I'll post on HKpro when I get time this week. Let's see what HK USA reps say

Oh sh#t I bought a Walther P99 after this .... Didn't know Walther is also by NS...

I was gonna accept my bad luck and let it go.
But since so many people are concerned I changed my mind,
I'll post on HK pro and might contact HK directly.

Will update

I had a USP for years without issue. Some numpty shot 9mm out of the .40 barrel and it was still ok. Hopefully going to the source will get you positive results. I would think that HK would want to ndt the balance of the slide to determine if there is a widespread issue on that serial range or if it’s a Monday morning hangover gun. A replaced gun is nothing compared to jeopardizing a government contract.

This is very true. Isn't it true that the civvie and contract guns are made on the same line? Are they made in the same batches or separate batches though?

Very odd failure. That section of the slide is not a stress point. Slides of semi-automatic pistols typically crack near the ejection port. Was there anything unusual about the shot that caused it, other than the FTE? Any damage to the guide rod or the dust cover?

9mm out of a 40sw?????? Is this even possible without high risk of catastrophic damage?

It's possible. When we were testing a bunch of pistols for adoption by a large police agency, one of the testers said the accuracy of the Beretta 96 (.40) he tried was horrible. We discovered he had been shooting 9 mm rounds through it! grabbed a 9 mm mag by mistake and did not check it.

I managed to ignite a 9mm in a 45ACP 1911. Nothing earth shattering happened. A lot of smoke poured out of the action and that's about it.
Lord knows where the projectile ended up after rattling down the bore.

I wonder what kind of damage to the barrel occurred in each of those scenarios? The projectile "bouncing" off the barrel walls couldn't do any good...

It shot just as well after the incident. It was 2-3 rounds. I over estimated the capabilities of a fellow troop and it near cost me.
I just hope HK does the right thing and replaces the slide or the entire pistol.

sorry for not updating for so long, kind of forgot about this... life moves on.

so I got an old used USP(date code KF) from a friend for cheap, now I just have a lot of redundant USP parts in case something else fails lol.

Given up on getting a free slide from HK, not much response on the HKpro.com forum, people there have seen a lot...

So that's that, I hope your USPs have a long life.

sorry for very late reply, I forgot about this thread.

Nope, everything was normal, guess I dropped it at a bad angle and that accidentally made this thin slide part to break. I should have bought a lottery on that day.

Are you saying you dropped it on the ground?

Yeah, I thought I mentioned it in my original post, but apparently not.

I dropped it on the ground from waist height at my house the day before I went to the range. gun was dropped as a whole, and unloaded. it slipped off my hand.
