After reading through some of this thread I'm trying to rememberthe last 'Magnumz R Awesome! Regular cartridges are for weenies and losers' CGN thread and I honestly can't remember when I read one.

In other news, as a long standing 30-30/303/30-06 guy I finally bought my first gen-u-wine belted Magnum... a m700 sps in 7mm Rem Mag. And here is the shocking thing.... it is actually more comfortable to shoot than my old Tikka 30-06 even though it's a pound lighter and has the dreaded belt of shame on its case... Wow who knew?

This reflects my own experience as well. Model 700 7mm RemMag with less recoil than Tikka in .30-06. Before all the scientists in the crowd weigh in with their explanations, the one factor that could explain this is felt recoil. I've been trying to come up with my own answers. They circle and come back to rifle design. The felt recoil with some rifles just defies grains of powder, burn rates, barrel length, bullet or gun weight. And it just is.

Comparitivey more ignorance is expressed by those criticizing “magnums”, than by the combined efforts of all the shooters who can’t shoot a centerfire above .30-30, yet do.

Great way to be critical without seeming, I like it. Reminds me of the South Africans I work with.

For the life of me, I can't figure out why someone wouldn't shoot the largest caliber they can use comfortably.

largest caliber with comfort (458 Magnum on White tail) OR largest caliber with comfort for the game hunted (44 magnum pistol/rifle ammo on white tail deer)?

You saying that molasses and barley are ok
....

Hot cook a batch of bacon in a skillet on yer Primus stove at around daybreak in yer camp & the critters downwind will soon be sniffn' their way to yer site. Works best fer me.;)

Ye best do this in a gully near a stream for best results. Bears tend to run uphill faster than downwards.:runaway:

the stream part is covered (live near a river) even get those shifty cougars (not the two legged kind you find at a local pub).

It’s all about practice, start off with light loads and work your way up. After alot of range time, my ex shot a 416 Taylor really well..we all have preferences of course , but if someone only shoots 10-20 rounds a year it’s pretty much a guarantee they will shoot a 270 more accurately than a 375... for me I enjoy shooting the big bores . In the process of building a 500AR on a ruger Mkii action , should be fun

Its a general rule, but largest with comfort full stop. Ie, if a lightweight .308 will give you a flinch. Shoot a .243 and get really good with it. If you can shoot a 300 win mag with comfort, and can afford it, there's no reason not to shoot a whitetail with it. Just my opinion, doing it as swiftly as possible is the most ethical way to do it. In a perfect world "if you do your job they all work the same" but when you're out in the field the world is rarely perfect. At the end of the day you need to keep 2 things in mind, 1) practice is paramount regardless of what caliber you shoot. 2) contrary to some dogmatic wisdom something can't be too dead.

If you were able to compile a list of all the big game kills in North America I'm betting the puny .270, 30/06, 30/30, .303 and .308 are at the top of the list

Interestingly; there is a list with every species of North American big game and what they were taken with. The list obviously can't list every animal, but it is a cross section of successful hunters, with the usual blend of weapons. The results might surprise you.

I don't think there's anything surprising on that list, Whitetail skew the list due to legal restrictions. Getting away from that; 270, 30-06, 7 Mag, and 300 Mag are the most used. The ammo shelf at Canadian Tire agrees.
