Just curious to get informed opinion here,

I really enjoy shooting my lightly modified sks ( matador rail, russian red dot sight). Really enjoy how easy it is to strip down and clean.

I have the opportunity to purchase a modded VZ 58 at a good price but was wondering what the VZ did better than the SKS. (IE ; Why should I buy one)

Based on my readings, it seems marginaly more accurate, maybe slightly more ergonomic, and a bit more complex to strip and clean.

What do you think ?

The VZ58 also has easier to use mags if you care about that sort of thing. I prefer to just use stripper clips in the factory sks mag.
 
Ergonomic, lighter, more accurate. I would say less reliable tho.

I have owned afew now. I don't think the vz will ever have a permenent home in my collection like an sks. Its basically a lead slinger.
 
I would go 58 or 858 without question. Lighter, better handling and balance, takes ripper clips and is easy to clean. Frankly the SKS is harder to get apart and clean than the 58.
 
A heavily modified SKS is only one thing more than an non-modified SKS - HEAVY. VZ58 is more accurate, every bit as reliable, easier to field strip, better with magazines, better quality aftermarket doodads.

lol keep dreaming. A non modified SKS has no optic, has no detachable mags, no muzzle device, generally a crappy trigger, often a loose stock, a mag that doesnt open on a closed bolt, a relatively short LOP, no bypod mount and a poky chunk of iron folded away on the front that makes the rifle more front heavy.

You are missing the point.
 
Nowadays the difference lies on price.
SKS 200 to 300 $
VZ58/858 1200 to 1500 $.

VZ58/858 is easier to clean (corrosive ammo).
VZ58/858 is lighter and shorter than the SKS.
VZ58/858 is the Canadian AK while the SKS is the do it all cheap Canadian semi-auto NR.
 
Get both. But if you are going to mod the SKS, just save the dough for the VZ. Murray 3D (and others) did list some good reasons to go with a VZ58 over the sks. It is a quality gun that works very well in every respect. Make sure you get the bolt release and ambi mag release. These are the best mods to add to the VZ58. You can control everything with peter pointer without changing your trigger hand's grip. It realky takes it to another level.

So, you are saying that select fire is the only characteristic that makes any gun better than an SKS? Really? So then an AR15 or any other rifle for that matter is no better than an SKS? You are not even on the right page here.
 
A typical unmodded sks weighs 8.5 lbs. and is front heavy (a bit), and has a too short butt stock. The cz is around 1.5-2 lbs lighter, and shorter. It is not front heavy. It has a detachable mag.
They both do much the same thing otherwise, when you take them out to the range, except for the above.
So, if you remove the bayo on the sks, put in a $10, 2" spacer pad, you have corrected for the short butt stock, reduced the weight and front heaviness (but the bayo works well as a monopod!) and saved a pile of money by not investing in the cz and a bunch of cleaning time etc.

And no, I've never owned or shot a cz, so this is just my opinion. That said, you might want to give the cz a try if money and time is no object.

-lighter
-more option to mount optics
-more accessories
-detachable magazines
-better accuracy
-better ergonomic

SKS are nice but they are definitly not on par with VZ58 platforms. Only positive with SKS over the VZ58 is the price

...Or has never shot one as mentioned above. The sks rocks and im so grateful that we can have it at such an amazing price point. I dont think anything even comes close for even double or triple the money. But i would gladly drop $1000-1200 on a VZ over an sks every time.

If the VZ is a possibility in terms of cost than I'd say you can probably afford to have both.
