Fresh out of my assembly garage, a pieced together Ross 1905 Sporter. I say pieced together because the parts aren't all original to one rifle. This is #2 in my sporter collection now, but this one far outshines the first one in appearance. Chambered in .303 Brit, but I haven't actually fired a shot through it yet. I sure hope it shoots well after all the work put in.....

Credits to the following:

The colour case hardening thanks to Oskar Kob.

The stock was carved out by Bill with Alberta Gun Stocks.

And the barrel was made and profiled by Bob Jury.

I also better not forget to thank Wayne (Wild Bill) for the rear sites and elevators for these rifles!

Stock finishing, barrel threading and chambering, all hot bluing and assembly were done by myself.

Very Nice !!!!!! Love those Ross rifles. I have a 1910 that I had reworked with a new barrel, bluing, sporter stock, etc.
I understand that the 1905 has a very unusual thread, barrel to receiver. Did you have any problems
duplicating that? The color case-hardening is superb, and looks classy. Now you need to "hunt" that fine rifle. :) Dave.

No problems with the thread now. I have a lathe that just so happens to have the right gears for the thread pitch. A few practice tries on scrap, and this is now the 3rd Ross 1905 I've completed. 2 sporters and the 3rd a target rifle.

Nice thing is that you've got a commercial chamber - much easier on brass. I've got a similar gun, purchased from a noted board member. It goes deer hunting with me regularly, as will my recently purchased BSA model D sporter in 303...

A nice piece of work that one be. If it were mine though, I'd go with a band-mounted rear sight . Dovetail cutting into a thin barrel gives me concerns over barrel
harmonics, and an early Winchester 94 rear sight looks rather out of place on a Ross to my eyes. No biggie really if the beasty shoots well fer ye.;)

Not sure what's even an original rear sight for these sporters. The previous sporter I restored came to me with the same rear site, dovetailed barrel and all. It was the factory sporter barrel as well. I'm just not sure if that was the factory sight or if it was swapped at some point.

Only crummy thing about these Winchester sights is where they sit on the barrel. It's a good deal lower than the receiver, so you need to really elevate the sight to get a good view of it.

I'm out of front sights and butt plates, so my next rifle will be even less original. Might even try for a different chambering.....

I have a 1905R very similar to yours with the buckhorn rear sight and as far as I know it is factory original. A family member has another 1905 with a barrel band rear express sight with a couple of flip up leafs marked with 100,200, 300. Again, factory original. I think it was a higher grade as there is some checkering on the stock as well.

Then you need to look at a few more Ross sporters and familiarize yourself with the variations. The standard R model of both the 1905 and 1910 sporting rifles had the Winchester sight. The E models had checkering and the express type sights. Fitting a band sight to an R model would look rather out of place to those that know.
