S&W 15 Sport 2 Fore-end Accessories Question

I own a S&W 15 Sport 2. If I want to add accessories to the fore-end, such as a vertical fore-grip, flashlight or bi-pod, do I need to replace the stock hand-guard with a hand-guard that allows attachments (M-Lok?), or can I attach them to the stock hand-guard?
If I do need to replace the hand-guard, do I need special tools?

Thanks.

Your best bet for versatility is to replace the hand guard for one that accepts m-lock accessories. If you go with a free float hand guard you will need an ar15 barrel wrench to change it out. The easier way is to go with a Magpul 2 piece hand gourd that is a direct replacement for the stock hand guard. No tool needed then and it is set up for m-lock accessories.

Cheers

Thank you.

Carbine length is the right one for the sport 2. I went with the moe m-lok but the moe sl m-lok would work as well. you'll need to pick accesories that are attached directly to the m-lok system or get some m-lok picatinny rail sections to attach non m-lok accessories

If it were me, I would free float. Chop the A2 sight or pick up a low profile gasblock for like 60 bucks and an affordable Mlok handguard from somewhere like TNA for around $150 and you have yourself not only a nice lookin rifle, but also with lots of real estate for accessories and length to grip further forward if that's how you hold your rifle.

Can you elaborate on this? How would I chop the A2 sight? Why do I need a gas block?

The A2 frontsight is your gasblock/frontsight now, if you want a free float you have to switch to a low profile gasblock that fits under the handguard and you lose your front sight post.

Chopping the A2 front sight post is complex and unless you are very comfortable with power tools/have a nice vice and other tools required to disassemble an ar-15 i would not recommend it. Replacing the A2 front sight with a low profile gas block will require the same tools but will require no maching/cutting of the A2 sight. The magpul forend was designed for people who just wanted an easy drop in replacement that allowed for accessory attachment without the need to buy any specialty tools.

So it all depends on how involved with the ar-15 you want to be. if you see yourself doing a ground up built someday, sure buy the tools and get the free float and install it. Personally I like the A2 front sight post and look of the magpul. get yourself a nice magpul forend with a decent optic that lines up with the A2 post i.e. co-witness. Combine that with your BUIS rear and you've got a very nice setup.

Thanks. I'm pretty comfortable with power tools but I think I'm going to stick with the A2 sight.
Any recommendations for a vertical foregrip?

Magpul moe sl drop in handgards. They look nice and slick and a bit longer reach than the regular moe. Foregrip depends on how you hold your rifle. I like the BCM mlok gunfighter verticle grip as i don’t hold the foregrip but use it as a handstop.

Did you replace it with the MOE or MOE-SL? Carbine length?

I replaced the original handguard with a MOE SL in carbine length, mainly because I preferred the look and fit in the hand. I am also using a M-Lok quick detach sling mount; no vertical foregrip for me.

You can keep your handguard , get a magpul RVG , comes with a small rail section that will fit snugly through the vent holes in the bottom , for the flashlight , you want this from GG&G ,
Copy and paste , close the gap between ht th

I'm also trying to figure out how to attach a sling. I obviously have the loops that come with the S&W (on the bottom of the stock and on the bottom of the front sight) but attaching to those makes the rifle flip upside down. What are those connectors you have there?

This is the front one , I got mine from Armseast a long time ago ,

For the rear one , this ,

Or you can just run the sling through the slot itself and double it back through a buckle .

+1 to Greenhorse Six’s comments. You don’t need a $2-300 rail to mount a grip and light. A standard A2 grip can also easily be modified to mount on the handguard.

He has a USGI side sling mount up front but you can just use two loops of paracord to do the same thing. Google expedient sling or Israeli sling for ideas.
