1st Annual Shotgun Throwdown and Raisin Run, Crumlin Edition, June 8th 2019

Over several years have never been muzzle-swept by a Crumlin member at skeet or 5-stand. Maybe its the open to outsider events that are scary(?)
Is there a difference in registration cost for members (club owners) vs. guests? Earlier a sincere question was ignored regarding relative disadvantage of O/u for the action challenges. Would be interested in finding out what the answer to that is or what exactly the slug and birdshot and buckshot action sports entail. The Jian Ghomeshi choke comment made me spit out coffee.

Its not just "outsiders"
Having been around the clay sports for a long time, I can attest to less than perfect muzzle discipline on the part of trap/skeet shooters.
Break action shotgun, slung over the shoulder, the barrels are pointing at anyone the person is facing.
I'm guilty of it myself. Its very easy to have happen.

We all know that the gun is empty and unable to fire while broken open, but in the action shooting sports we're taught to never have the gun pointed anywhere but in a safe direction regardless of how sure you are that the gun is empty/"safe"

Now with a semi, and someone walking around using trail carry, from a distance there is no way to easily see if the action is open or closed and it can be unsettling.

The O/U question earlier was a joke, but to answer your question:
For the trap/skeet/5 stand portion of the event, a clay sport specific O/U would be preferable to the type of shotguns we normally use in action shooting, but won't be a significant advantage.

For the other events, 99.9% of the competitors will be using a semi or pump of some sort, with extended magazine capacity.
For these events, you are being timed.
Having to reload after every two shots can be a rather large disadvantage (unless you are a world champion cowboy action competitor) against someone who doesn't have to do so and has a gun purpose built for action shooting.

No need to take it personal.
As someone who plays both games I have perspective from both sides.

Like I mentioned, muzzle discipline is ingrained in action shooting, so having barrels pointed at you goes against everything we've been taught.
As I also mentioned, I know there is zero danger from an O/U on the shoulder.
I feel its just good practice to be aware of where your gun is pointing at all times and a common courtesy to not be pointing a gun at people unnecessarily.
That's really all that is being said.

You sound pretty set in your ways, but if your mind opens up a bit between now and next summer, hopefully you'll come see what all the fun is about.
Maybe even take part.
 
so pauls i guess the stage with volunteers holding plates above their heads will be thrown out. Thats why i keep pressing for body armor allowance in ipsc ..just incase i get swept.
And why would a broken shotgun over the shoulder be "immanent danger"......? this dude just suffered a secondary sprain or perhaps a shoulder dislocation due to blunt force trauma . The person who hit him with it should be DQ immediately!!!!!! or at least a procedural for un sportsman like behavior.

well I appreciate your even keel pauls, even if it seems like tolerating the uninitiated is a challenge. 7.62 if your name is Craig then I understand your sense of shotgunner inferiority because you are not in the same league (or anywhere near) the wingshooters or clay shooters I know.

As long as the volunteers have eye protection we should be good to go, CFO approved and all that.

Your assessment of this 762 character is spot on.
I've had limited interactions with him, but I feel that's probably a good thing...

I do sense a challenge is being made here though.

This should be a riot I haven't shot trap or skeet in forever Think I know where my money is at in the skeet-off but who can we trust to hold the pot? Most of the shooters I know are extremely untrustworthy with money or at least that's what their wives say.
 
Howard I've seen u shoot shotgun before and u were pretty good with it.
Saying u never shotgun before is like me saying I've never eaten dog meat ( disclaimer: really thought it was chicken)
 
Sometime in April (2019), i will host a single day (Saturday) session at Crumlin to go over Skeet/5-Stand and Trap. I will post a date and time as the event date gets closer.
